Plants in Action
Plants in Action From September 2010, the first edition of Plants in Action is republished as an electronic text book. It is open access and downloads are free. Plants in Action Website The next stage will be the complete revision of the book, with an expected completion date of September 2011. It will be a fully edited and peer-reviewed wiki. Comments and volunteer contributions are welcome. These can be made by contacting the editorial team listed on the home page of Plants in Action2 Plants in Action is written by plant scientists from Australian and New Zealand as a plant biology book for senior undergraduates and a resource for postgraduates and young research scientists. Open access web resources are transforming education, and Plants in Action is the first plant science textbook contributing to this unrestricted sharing of scientific knowledge. This first stage of the Plants in Action web project is made possible by generous sponsorship of the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR) and the University of Queensland. The next stage will be the complete revision of the book, with an expected completion date of September 2011. It will be a fully edited and peer-reviewed wiki, with a discussion and comments page for each chapter. The overall structure of first edition

104. Cadmium Accumulation In Durum Wheat - Introduction
Summary of research exploring the physiological basis for high accumulation of cadmium (Cd) in durum wheat grain.
http://www.biology.ualberta.ca/cadmium
Background To better understand the physiological basis for high accumulation of cadmium (Cd) in durum wheat grain we have completed a whole-plant Cd mass balance for a pair of near-isogenic durum wheat lines, high and low for Cd accumulation in grain. Plants of both isolines were grown in Cd-labelled chelator-buffered hydroponic culture, and were harvested at various times during grain filling and analysed for Cd accumulation. The objectives of this research were to:
  • Determine the relationship between grain filling and grain Cd accumulation; Identify major plant Cd pools; and Quantify the development of plant Cd pools during grain filling.
  • Results Interactive tissue map of Cd accumulation Animated summary of Cd accumulation Plant growth movies [requires Flash Player Time-course of durum wheat growth (0.8 MB) Durum wheat plant, 2 wks post-anthesis (0.8 MB) NSERC Strategic Project Grant 246719: "Regulation of cadmium accumulation in the grain of durum wheat" (2001-2004).
