    Plant taxonomy
Home Library Science Sci-Tech Encyclopedia The area of study focusing on the development of a classification system, or taxonomy , for plants based on their evolutionary relationships ( phylogeny ). The assumption is that if classification reflects phylogeny, reference to the classification will help researchers focus their work in a more accurate manner. The task is to make phylogeny reconstruction as accurate as possible. The basic unit of classification is generally accepted to be the species, but how a species should be recognized has been intensely debated. See also Plant kingdom Plant phylogeny The earliest classifications of plants were those of the Greek philosophers such as Aristotle (384–322 B.C.) and Theophrastus (372–287 B.C.). The latter is often called the father of botany largely because he listed the names of over 500 species, some of which are still used as scientific names today. In the next 1600 years little progress occurred in plant taxonomy. It was not until the fifteenth century that there was renewed interest in botany, much of which was propelled by the medical use of plants. In 1753 Carolus Linnaeus, a Swedish botanist, published his Species Plantarum , a classification of all plants known to Europeans at that time. Linnaeus's system was based on the arrangement and numbers of parts in flowers, and was intended to be used strictly for identification (a system now referred to as an artificial classification as opposed to a natural classification, based on how closely related the species are).

    Occupational Listings and Files
With the recent release by the Office of Management and Budget of an updated Standard Occupational Classification (2010 SOC), the O*NET project is moving forward with plans to transition O*NET-SOC to this new SOC standard. Those plans include:
    • development of a crosswalk of the current O*NET-SOC 2009 to the 2010 SOC (completed June 2010); development of an updated O*NET-SOC 2010 taxonomy based on the new SOC; and release of an updated O*NET database reflecting the updated taxonomy.
Today, the O*NET-SOC 2009 to 2010 SOC crosswalk allows users to see how the O*NET-SOC 2009 taxonomy fits within the 2010 SOC structure. Users can identify an existing O*NET-SOC 2009 code/title to see corresponding 2010 SOC occupation(s) or can identify a 2010 SOC code/title to see corresponding O*NET-SOC 2009 occupation(s). In fall 2010, an updated taxonomy report will be released which will describe the new O*NET-SOC 2010 taxonomy structure based on the 2010 SOC. Code, title, or definition changes that will occur from transitioning to the new SOC 2010 structure will be detailed in the report. In addition, the overall relationship between the 2010 SOC and the O*NET-SOC 2010 will be summarized. In early 2011

"Taxonomy simply means classification, so the well-known taxonomy of learning objectives is an attempt (within the behavioural paradigm) to classify forms and levels of learning. It identifies three domains of learning (see below), each of which is organised as a series of levels or pre-requisites. It is suggested that one cannot effectively or ought not try to address higher levels until those below them have been covered (it is thus effectively serial in structure). As well as providing a basic sequential model for dealing with topics in the curriculum, it also suggests a way of categorising levels of learning, in terms of the expected ceiling for a given programme. Thus in the Cognitive domain, training for technicians may cover knowledge, comprehension

    Taxonomy
Taxonomy is the practice and science of classification, or naming things. It is derived from two Greek words: taxis nomos In the taxonomy of living things there are various ranks of taxa. Commonly used ranks (in descending sequence from most inclusive) include: kingdom, phylum, order, family, genus and species. Ranks below species include subspecies and variety. National Herbarium of Victoria
    The origins of taxonomy
The Swedish scientist, Carl (or Carolus) Linnaeus is generally regarded as the originator of the system on which current taxonomy is based. His Systema Naturae published in 1735 established basic divisions within the natural world where naturally occurring things were regarded as plants, animals or minerals. Species Plantarum, the baseline treatise on botanical nomenclature , was published by Linnaeus in 1753 and provided the foundation for modern plant and fungal taxonomy. This work outlined all the organisms known to Linnaeus with a concise description and a binomial (a two-word name) consisting of a genus name and a species name. Binomials were initially used by Linnaeus as a shorthand, but have since been adopted as the standard way to refer to all living organisms. In the binomial Banksia integrifolia Banksia is the genus name and integrifolia is the species epithet.

The Hennig Society was founded in 1980 with the expressed purpose of promoting the field of Phylogenetic Systematics. Hennig's idea that groups of organisms, or taxa, should be recognized and formally named only in cases where they are evolutionarily real entities, that is "monophyletic", at first was controversial. It is now the prevailing approach to modern systematics. The Society has a strong international character meeting once a year, typically only every other year in North America. The journal Cladistics is the official publication of the Willi Hennig Society comprising a rich mixture of theortical and empirical peer-reviewed contributions to phylogenetic systematics. The Willi Hennig Society is a registered 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization incorporated in the District of Columbia with its business
office registered in the state of New York.

    Phylogenetics: just methods
The number of available methods in phylogeny and systematics may appear to be daunting not only to beginning students but also to well-established researchers. Admittedly, anyone with a copy of, say, PAUP* can learn how to "point and shoot" to make a neighbor-joining tree, or a cladogram or a likelihood tree, but this doesn't really mean you know what you're doing and we suspect that you'd probably like to know. This site is designed to do that. To provide you with an understanding of the various methods you might encounter so as to allow you to make informed decisions about what you think is defensible and appropriate. TOPICS

    MrBayes: Bayesian Inference of Phylogeny
Home Download Manual Online Help ... Links MrBayes is a program for the Bayesian estimation of phylogeny. Bayesian inference of phylogeny is based upon a quantity called the posterior probability distribution of trees, which is the probability of a tree conditioned on the observations. The conditioning is accomplished using Bayes's theorem. The posterior probability distribution of trees is impossible to calculate analytically; instead, MrBayes uses a simulation technique called Markov chain Monte Carlo (or MCMC) to approximate the posterior probabilities of trees. The program takes as input a character matrix in a NEXUS file format. The output is several files with the parameters that were sampled by the MCMC algorithm. MrBayes can summarize the information in these files for the user. The program features include:
    • A common command-line interface for Macintosh, Windows, and UNIX operating systems;

A world in which the capacity to name all living organisms is accessible to serve the needs of people everywhere.
    Taxonomy
Taxonomy - the science of discovering, naming, describing and classifying organisms - not only produces fascinating knowledge on the characteristics of life on our planet, above all it delivers basic and indispensible knowledge for many fields of human interest and contributes in many ways to the sustainability of our planet.
    BioNET's main aims
BioNET - the global network for taxonomy - is an international initiative dedicated to promoting the science and use of taxonomy, especially in the economically poorer countries of the world. To date the network comprises ten government-endorsed regional networks, the 'Locally Owned and Operated Partnerships' (LOOPs), encompassing institutions and 3,000 individuals in over 100 countries, and a Secretariat in the UK hosted by CABI, an international not-for-profit organisation.
Working via local and international partnerships, BioNET strives to provide a forum for collaboration that is equally open to all taxonomists and to the other users of taxonomy. Our work contributes to raising awareness of the importance of taxonomy to society, building and sharing of capacity, and meeting taxonomic needs via innovative tools and approaches.
