Theoretical biology biology . Numbers of separate areas of biology fall into a conception of theoretical biology, based on data from a way it is exposed. A select few one areas include: animal behaviour, biorhythms, cell biology, complexity of biological systems, ecology , enzyme kinetics, evolutionary biology, genetics immunology , membrane transport, microbiology , molecular structures, morphogenesis, physiological mechanisms, systems biology and the origin of life. Neurobiology is an example of the subdiscipline of biology which already has the theoretical version of its have, theoretical or even computational neuroscience. Theoretical biologists

SFI draws scientists from universities and research institutions world-wide to pursue broad research problems. Much of the work focuses on the science of complexity (emergence), which examines underlying patterns and regularities behind a wide assortment of real-world phenomena. Projects range from the communication patterns of ants to the way information spreads across economic markets.
Theoretical Biology and Biophysics (T-10)

The Theoretical Biology and Biophysics Group (T-10) at Los Alamos National Laboratory focuses on the modeling of biological systems and the analysis and informatics of molecular and cellular biological data.

Web: http://www.nbi.dk/~emmeche/ Research interests (and a few related links): The moving target of my research is indicated by these keywords: General philosophy of science , especially biology (I have done work on emergence and levels of organization in biosystems, and on the philosophy artificial life); Biosemiotics (a wildly growing field I desperately try to follow, see links below) as an alternative philosophy of nature; and Science Studies
Regarding science studies my focus has increasingly been the institutional framework of research: In recent years the Danish university system has changed radically towards a more entrepreneurial and managerial regime (like in many other countries), with consequences for academic freedom and the traditional ways of securing quality and independence of research. I am interested in the consequences of this shift, not only for academic freedom, but for the whole institutional setting of public, governmental and private research. (A spin-off project is the blog " University Politics - universities as a public good
As this is a huge subject, I have recently chosen "science studies of academic dismissals" as a sub-speciality, with Denmark as a case of a nation who had never known genuine tenure at the university, but where one now experiences a decrease of the little employment security there was.

    Research
Our aim: Fundamental research in Theoretical Biology and Bioinformatics. Biotic systems are complex dynamic information processing systems in which processes on many space and time scales interact. Our aim is to understand them as such. To this end we develop and analyze mathematical/computational models of a broad range of biological systems. In the seventies we coined the term bioinformatics for the study of informatic processes in biotic systems. According to the Oxford English Dictionary this was the first use of the term bioinformatics. The concept provides us with a unified framework for a research area for which a variety of names have now become fashionable, which includes, apart from bioinformatics ss (i.e. data-analysis of e.g. genomic data), the dynamic modeling approaches referred to as "systems biology", "computational life sciences", "computational biology", and which partially overlaps with "complex systems research" and "Artifical Life". Our formalisms range from mathematical models, cellular automata, genetic algorithms, to discrete-event individual-oriented simulation models. The research of our group is part of the Life Sciences and Biocomplexity and the Infection and Immunity focus areas of the Utrecht University.

SHORT COURSES ON THE MATHEMATICS OF BIOLOGICAL COMPLEXITY
University of Tennessee, Knoxville Supported by National Institutes of Health Award GM59924-02 For related NIH programs see NIGMS Complex Systems Initiatives 2003 Short Courses
The 2003 series of Short Courses will be held at the University of Tennessee and as with earlier ones, these are oriented towards biologically-trained individuals. The overall objective is to provide a rapid introduction to the mathematical and computational topics appropriate for understanding current research in biological complexity. These Courses will each last four days. The Courses will be led by a group of distinguished faculty with particular expertise in biological modeling. Each Course will include computer-based workshops in addition to formal lectures and discussion sessions. Each Course is organized separately, though some individuals will benefit from attending two or more of them, depending upon their research interests. Significant financial support for travel, registration and housing expenses are available to qualified applicants (particularly graduate students, post-doctoral fellows and faculty without externally-funded projects).
