    Theoretical Biology
Theoretical biology is a field of academic study and research that involves the use of models and theories in biology.
Initial scientific efforts to understand complex biological phenomena, such as evolution by natural selection or human consciousness, can be described as theoretical "framework" approaches. The common use of this word throughout the biological literature has only recently culminated in a formal definition offered by Francis Crick and Christof Koch: (Wikipedia)

Michael Lachmann The main interest of the group is understanding evolutionary phenomena associated with evolutionary transitions of the selected units. Examples for such transitions include the evolution of multicellularity, the evolution of eusocial groups, such as ant and wasp colonies, the evolution of human culture, and the origin of Darwinian selection. Such transitions raise very interesting evolutionary questions, and we try to address some of them. Currently, we are working on the following directions: Evolution of differentiation Multicellular organisms follow a developmental plan leading them from the fertilized egg to an adult organism. Different cells in the adult can perform different functions, and express different genes. These are the different cell types that are part of the various tissues of the multicellular organism. Some of the questions that interst us are:

Decomplexity - a simple business
What is it?
Responsive business
while at the same time
  • severs the connections between his or her business area and others such that the impact of his or her decisions on other areas is not unacceptably large
These two steps must happen together. If the first happens before the second, the business would be unstable. If the second happens before the first, the business would simply remain a slow-to-react decentralized business.
there are optimal values for K and C such that the business is as responsive as possible consistent with its hanging together as one business
Background
The decomplexity process had its origins in evolutionary biology and the physics of avalanches (phase transitions), but was heavily influenced by problems encountered in the design of large and complex artefacts, notably computer systems and buildings. Computer software systems historically suffered from three distinct logical problems which were unrelated to the applications they were being used for:
  • they were large they were heterogeneous (most parts were unlike other parts; there is little which is repetitive in developing an operating system, unlike the construction of the many floors of a skyscraper or laying the rails of a railway)

Master track
The master track "Theoretical Biology and Bioinformatics" builds on 30 years of bioinformatics research and teaching at Utrecht University. It is a special track within the more general biology master program Molecular and Cellular Life Sciences of the Graduate School of Life Sciences (GS-LS) at Utrecht University. Most of the master track is devoted to perform original research in Theoretical Biology and Bioinformatics, and involves two large research projects in modeling and/or bioinformatics, and attending a number of courses given by our group, by the GS-LS, and/or by others. Research will be directed towards a certain biological topic, and good biological knowledge of that topic is required. Part of the research can also be done in a relevant experimental laboratory. Students in our master track will be trained in the conceptual and technical skills for doing research in Theoretical Biology and Bioinformatics, and will be have to become familiar with the biology in their particular area of interest. The conceptual training includes identifying and formulating theoretical research topics, that are interesting and relevant, and critical evaluating published theoretical research. The technical training includes mathematics, pattern analysis, modeling and simulation. The student will learn not only to use existing methods to do novel research, but also to develop novel methods to do innovative research. This master track will prepare the participants for a PhD thesis in theoretical biology and/or bioinformatics in the participating groups or in other laboratories (experimental and theoretical).

to the Department of Biological Cybernetics at the University of Bielefeld. We are a young, cross-disciplinary research group that combines approaches from behavioural physiology, electrophysiology, informatics and bionics. Our focus in research is on sensory-guided control of behaviour in insects and bio-inspired robotic systems . Our overall goal in science is to provide formal models of the mechanisms underlying the control of natural movement and action sequences The Department of Biological Cybernetics is part of the Center of Excellence in Cognitive Interaction Technology, CITEC , and also of the focus group on within the Faculty of Biology. The Department of Biological Cybernetics has been founded in 1980. The first head of department was Holk Cruse . In 2009, the lab was fundamentally restructured. It is now headed by

Theoretical biology
Modern biology is largely reductionistic, which means
  • the reduction of biology as a science to physics and chemistry, which has not yet been accomplished in reality, life is reduced to complex chemical and physical processes, and a living being is reduced to a complex aggregation of countless molecules.
Life is mostly seen as a complicated molecular phenomenon revolving around the axis of the miraculous molecule of DNA. Through such treatment, a living being as a whole loses its autonomy, which is clearly seen from the very prevalent selfish gene paradigm (see the World of Dawkins, Selfish Gene However, this is not the only possible and scientifically acceptable view of life. There is a challenging alternative, namely its organistic ( structuralistic ) concept. It may be understood as a theoretical framework that treats processes and structural elements in living organisms as an emergent entity with new qualities that are irreducible to its structural elements - a whole. This whole is seen as possessing properties and laws, which are impossible to derive or foretell just from knowing the properties and laws of its partial or elementary processes and structural elements. The organismic whole is thus autonomous. See Goodwin About genes ultraweak ). There are other research fields that prove a long range order in organisms, as for instance discovery of bands of colors when the living organism is exposed to polarized light in an unconventionally used polarization microscope, discovered by Mae Wan Ho.

Dept. for Innovative Methods of Computing
Head of the department is Andreas Deutsch Mission Our main research interest lies in the development of mathematical models and simulation tools to detect organizational principles of selected biological systems. We focus on "cellular systems" which possess a multitude of interaction possibilities whose cooperative interplay guarantees in particular the development of organismic forms. Disorders in cell interaction can imply diseases and malignant pattern formation (e.g. tumor growth). We work on concrete interdisciplinary projects on the basis of local, national and international cooperations. Important insights into function and regulation of biological systems can be expected from the linking of mathematical modeling and computational tools with biological/medical (in vitro, in vivo and field) data.
A further research field focuses on the exploitation of ideas inspired by self-organizing biological systems (e.g. immune system) for solving computing tasks (e.g. search for information) in dynamic technical and communication networks. Current Events Colmot 2010 The international workshop Statistical Physics and Biology of Collective Motion will take place November 8-12, 2010 in Dresden. It is coordinated by Guy Théraulaz, Tamas Vicsek and Andreas Deutsch.
