Humans have been fascinated by the other members of the animal kingdom throughout history. In early Europe , they gathered up and catalogued descriptions of strange animals from distant lands or deep seas , such as are recorded in the Physiologus and in the works of Albertus Magnus . His work was based largely on the writings of Aristotle (384–322 BC). Magnus'

Dictionary: zo·ol·o·gy zō-ŏl ə-jē, zū- Home Library Dictionary n. pl. -gies
  • The branch of biology that deals with animals and animal life, including the study of the structure, physiology, development, and classification of animals. The animal life of a particular area or period: the zoology of Alaska; the zoology of the Pleistocene. The characteristics of a particular animal group or category: the zoology of mammals. A book or scholarly work on zoology.
  • zoologist zo·ol o·gist n. USAGE NOTE Traditionally, the first syllable of zoology has been pronounced as (ō), rhyming with toe. However, most likely due to the familiarity of the word zoo (which is merely a shortened form of zoological garden ), the pronunciation of the first syllable as (ū) is also commonly heard. In 1999, 88 percent of the Panelists found the (zō-) pronunciation acceptable, and 60 percent found the (zū-) pronunciation acceptable, with 68 percent using the (zō-) pronunciation and 32 percent using the (zū-) pronunciation in their own speech. Thus, while both pronunciations can be considered acceptable, the (zō-) pronunciation may be perceived as more correct.

Vertebrate Zoology is the study of animals with backbones. Research in the department covers fishes amphibians, reptiles birds , and mammals . The department holds the largest collection of vertebrate specimens in the world, including historically important collections from the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Research in the department provides a solid foundation of understanding for government agencies, conservation organizations, and individuals involved in fish and wildlife management. Zoologists from two other federal agencies work so closely with colleagues and specimens at the Museum that they are permanently stationed in the building. Specialists from the National Marine Fisheries Service of the U.S. Department of Commerce focus primarily on commercially important fishes, while those from the

Zoology is the integrative study of animal biology
Research and teaching in the MSU Zoology Department explores a wide range of biological questions in a diverse array of species, using cutting edge techniques in both the field and the laboratory. We are unified by an emphasis on integration across levels of biological organization, and by our recognition of the explanatory power of evolutionary theory in understanding biological complexity. This integrative perspective helps unify researchers in modern biological subdisciplines, including cellular and developmental biology, neurobiology, animal behavior, ecology, evolution, and environmental science. Zoology Zoology is the study of animal life in all its diversity, at scales that range from the sub-cellular to that of the ecosystem. It is this integration of perspectives that make zoology an exciting, dynamic science. we focus on animal behaviour, ecology, and conservation in our degree programme, while ensuring that students recieve a firm grounding in animal taxonomy, field skills and laboratory and analytical techniques. Career Prospects: The field of biology is an extremely dynamic and progressive one, with demand for graduates being high across a range of subdisciplines. 87% of our graduates from the School of Biological Sciences are in paid work or higher level study six months after graduation. Our graduates of Zoology enter a wide variety of careers in the biological sciences, including posts in conservation, animal welfare, education consultancy, pharmaceuticals, agriculture, the Civil Service and other public bodies such as local government conservation units and animal charities. As numerate scientists, they also enter a wide variety of other commercial and business occupations. Many graduates go on to specialist postgraduate training. A sample of the fields entered by recent Reading zoology graduates are: advanced taxonomy and biodiversity, conservation, ecotourism, environmental law and policy, nutritional medicine, and wildlife management.

Introduction from Douglas Meikle, Ph.D., Professor and Department Chair Our mission in the Department of Zoology at Miami University is to provide undergraduate and graduate students with excellent academic preparation and research experience. The Department is one of the largest at Miami University and also one of the largest Zoology programs in the nation. This allows us to offer a wide range of courses and seminars from cellular and molecular biology to conservation and environmental biology. Zoology students work closely with faculty members to plan their programs of study, conduct research, and pursue employment opportunities The Department has outstanding laboratory facilities that are supported by the University, as well as by grants from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, National Institutes of Health; National Science Foundation; the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency. Facilities include DNA sequencing, synthesizing, and analytical equipment and specialized equipment for cellular, developmental and neurophysiological research, including electron microscopy and confocal laser facilities.
