Adams, Samuel
(b. Sept. 27 [Sept. 16, old style], 1722, Bostond. Oct. 2, 1803, Boston), politician of the American Revolution, leader of the Massachusetts "radicals," who was a delegate to the Continental Congress (1774-81) and a signer of the Declaration of Independence. He was later lieutenant governor (1789-93) and governor (1794-97) of Massachusetts.
Early career
A second cousin of John Adams, second president of the United States, Samuel Adams was graduated from Harvard College in 1740 and briefly studied law; he failed in several business ventures. As a tax collector in Boston, he neglected to collect the public levies and to keep proper accounts, thus exposing himself to suit. Although unsuccessful in conducting personal or public business, Adams took an active and influential part in local politics. By the time the English Parliament passed the Sugar Act (1764) taxing molasses for revenue, Adams was a powerful figure in the opposition to British authority in the Colonies. He denounced the act, being one of the first of the colonials to cry out against taxation without representation. He played an important part in instigating the Stamp Act riots in Boston that were directed against the new requirement to pay taxes on all legal and commercial documents, newspapers, and college diplomas.

Vung Tau was located on the Vietnamese coast approximately 38 miles southeast of Tan Son Nhut and was a favorite resort area for the Vietnamese elite and foreign visitors alike for years. At approximately 0900 hours on Saturday, 30 October 1965, SSgt. Samuel Adams , SSgt. Charles G. Dusing, TSgt. Jasper N. Page and TSgt. Thomas Moore departed Tan Son Nhut Airbase in an Army UH1B helicopter bound for the resort city of Vung Tao and a weekend of swimming in the South China Sea. They arrived at roughly 1000 hours that day and the aircraft was to return the following day to transport them back to base. They rented a beach cottage and spent the remainder of the day and the next morning swimming and lying around the beach sunning themselves. In the early afternoon Samuel Adams placed a call to the Tan Son Nhut Airbase to confirm their flight back. He was informed the aircraft would not be there to pick them up as planned. After notifying the others, they began thinking of ways to return to Saigon.
