"I am one of the searchers. There are, I believe, millions of us. We are not unhappy, but neither are we really content. We continue to explore life, hoping to uncover its ultimate secret. We continue to explore ourselves, hoping to understand. We like to walk along the beach, we are drawn by the ocean, taken by its power, its unceasing motion, its mystery and unspeakable beauty. We like forests and mountains,, deserts and hidden rivers, and the lonely cities as well. Our sadness is as much a part of our lives as is our laughter. To share our sadness with one we love is perhaps as great a joy as we can know - unless it be to share our laughter. We searchers are ambitious only for life itself, for everything beautiful it can provide. Most of all we love and want to be loved. We want to live in a relationship that will not impede our wandering, nor prevent our search, nor lock us in prison walls; that will take us for what little we have to give. We do not want to prove ourselves to another or compete for love. For wanderers, dreamers, and lovers, for lonely men and women who dare to ask of life everything good and beautiful. It is for those who are too gentle to live among wolves."

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search James Allen (the poet) (November 28,1864 – 1912) was a philosophical writer of British nationality known for his inspirational books and poetry . His best known work, As a Man Thinketh , was mass produced since its publication in 1903 and has provided a key source of ideas to countless bestselling motivational and self-help authors of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. As a result he is considered as the pioneer of self help movement. As with many of Allen's works, the book's launch was quiet and its full impact was not felt until after his passing.

edit Background
Born in Leicester, England, into a working class family, Allen was the eldest of three brothers. His mother could neither read nor write while his father, William, was a factory knitter. In 1879, following a downturn in the textile trade of central England, Allen's father traveled alone to America to find work and establish a new home for the family. Within two days of arriving his father was pronounced dead at New York City Hospital, believed to be a case of robbery and murder. At age fifteen, with the family now facing economic disaster, Allen was forced to leave school and find work. For much of the 1890s, Allen worked as a private secretary and stationer in several British manufacturing firms. In 1893, Allen moved to London where he met

Born: April 14, 1964, Sacramento, CA
Current Residence: Sanborn, NY
High School: Shorecrest HS '82 (Seattle, WA)
College: Western Washington University '87 Career Highlights: Some like it hot. That was the case for Allen James, America's most dominant race walker in the 90s. He spent several years training to compete at his best in the 50km walk in the searing heat of Atlanta. He won the Trials in the fastest U.S. time of the year. Then, on August 2 in Atlanta, the heat lifted. "I was hoping for a hot day and we got an unusually cool day," he shrugs. "It was a very fast race. I was prepared for a battle in the heat. But you got to take your chances. I can't complain a whole lot. I wish I could have done a little better." James finished 24th in 4:01:18, a solid performance in any case. With that, hopes for U.S. walking got a rise. James followed with national titles at both Olympic distances: 20K and 50K. In 1995, he broke the four-hour barrier again with his 3:59:27 for sixth at the Pan-Am Games. Calling it "a great experience," James adds, "I wasn't really trained for a 50, and doing as well as I did, that was probably the highlight of the year. It was a real tough field." The son of an Air Force colonel and a Seattle store owner (his mother owns the Super Jock 'n' Jill running store, one of his major sponsors), James grew up as a self-described "track brat." Distance runner and coach Pat Tyson lived with the family while James grew up. Tyson turned James on to track and he started running age group events as a fourth-grader. Three years later he started race walking.

16. Flashback: Henry James And The Atlantic Monthly
Article on James and his publishing relationship with The Atlantic Monthly.

April 15, 1997
J ane Campion's film adaptation of The Portrait of a Lady has rekindled public interest in the lapidary, demanding novels of Henry James (1843-1916). This April 15th, on the 154th anniversary of James's birth, we've gathered together writing by and about James that has appeared over the years in The Atlantic Monthly From the time that James's first published short story appeared in The Atlantic "The Story of a Year" , March, 1865), William Dean Howells and subsequent Atlantic editors championed James's literary talents. This support was critical for James, as his difficult fiction demanded more attention of readers than the popular illustrated periodicals of the day were willing to court. Several of James's novels were serialized in The Atlantic including The Portrait of a Lady the first installment of which appeared in November, 1880. After Portrait appeared in book form The Atlantic gave it a glowing review James has continued to fascinate The Atlantic 's readers, writers, and editors. In "Henry James as Landlord" (August 1946), Louise Boit shares letters she received from James while renting Lamb House, his English home in Sussex. The letters show James as the best sort of landlord: full of good cheer and generous with both his household and his friendship. In

Allen James I will never forget the summer of 1992. I was in Barcelona, Spain fulfilling my childhood dream of competing in the Olympics. I remember as an 8-year-old boy watching the 1972 Summer games in Munich, Germany on television. I thought the greatest thing in the world would be to participate in the Olympics. As a youngster growing up in Seattle, my days were packed with activities. I loved sports and competed in cross-country , track, swimming and soccer. I also played three musical instruments: piano, trombone, and bagpipes. I had enough things to keep me busy from 7:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. That was a typical day! As I continued to improve my running skills, I was introduced to the unique event of racewalking while I was in the fourth grade. I quickly latched on to racewalking and became successful at it. After high school I took my talent to Western Washington University (Bellingham, WA) where I was a four-time NAIA All-American in the 10K walk. I was also a two time Academic All-American as well as the WWU Athlete of the Year as a senior. Since that time I have garnered a number of achievements; 1990 U.S. Olympic festival silver medalist, 20K walk; 1991 U.S. Olympic Festival gold medalist, 20K walk; 1991 TAC/USA Capt. Ron Zinn Memorial Award winner for outstanding 20K walker; personal record in the 20K walk 1:25:01 (4th on all time U.S. list); 1992 Olympic Trials 20K winner (New Orleans); 1992 Summer Olympics participant (Barcelona, Spain).
