His account appeared in English as Amundsen's North West Passage (1908). He then purchased Fridtjof Nansen 's Fram and prepared to drift toward the North Pole and then finish the journey by sledge. The news that Robert E. Peary had anticipated him in reaching the North Pole caused Amundsen to consider going south. He was successful in reaching the South Pole on Dec. 14, 1911, after a dash by dog team and skis from the Bay of Whales (an inlet of Ross Sea). He arrived there just 35 days before Robert F. Scott . This story he told in The South Pole (tr. 1913). In the course of these expeditions, he added much valuable scientific and geological information to the knowledge of Antarctica.

Biography
Norwegian scientific polar explorer, the first person to sail through the northwest passage. He discovered the South Pole in 1911 as the first to reach and record his passage. He also flew over the north pole in a dirigible three days after Byrd's air expedition, arriving there 5/12/1926. Amundsen died in a seaplane accident in the Arctic Ocean 6/18/1928. Where Admiral Byrd had been credited as the first man to fly over the North Pole, researchers of Byrd's newly discovered flight diary, discovered in January 1996, say that he actually flew short of his goal and knew it at the time. Where he actually saw the pole from his plane, his diary disproves his claim that he reached it, and they may have turned back some 150 miles short. Byrd's disqualification would hand the title to Amundsen. Long-term rivals, Amundsen's claim was well documented by detailed navigational records and corroborated by experts who traveled with him. Just a year earlier, he had made a similar attempt at the pole but suffered engine failure that stranded him and his crew for several weeks on the ice. Link to Wikipedia biography

(b . July 16, 1872, Borge, near Oslo, Nor.d. June 18, 1928?, Arctic Ocean), Norwegian explorer who was the first to reach the South Pole, the first to make a ship voyage through the Northwest Passage, and one of the first to cross the Arctic by air. He was one of the greatest figures in the field of polar exploration. Amundsen studied medicine for a while and then took to sea. In 1897 he sailed as first mate on the Belgica in a Belgian expedition that was the first to winter in the Antarctic. In 1903, with a crew of six on his 47-ton sloop Amundsen became the first man to sail through the Northwest Passage and around the northern Canadian coast; his east-west journey ended at Herschel Island in the Yukon in 1905. This achievement whetted his appetite for the spectacular in polar exploration. Amundsen's next plan, to drift across the North Pole in Fridtjof Nansen's old ship, the Fram was affected by the news that the American explorer Robert E. Peary had reached the North Pole in April 1909, but he continued his preparations. When Amundsen left Norway in June 1910 no one but his brother knew that he was heading for the South Pole instead of the North. He sailed the Fram directly from the Madeira Islands to the Bay of Whales, Antarctica, along the Ross Sea. The base he set up there was 60 miles (100 km) closer to the pole than the Antarctic base of the English explorer Robert Falcon
