It has never been published in Denmark. The hypertext is based on an etext found in the Andersen Homepage of the Danish National Literary Archive. It may be somewhat surprising to learn that a number of Andersen’s tales were published in America even before being published in Andersen’s native Denmark. According to Jean Hersholt’s introduction to The Andersen-Scudder Letters , University of California Press, 1949, ten tales were published by Horace Elisha Scudder, Andersen’s American editor, publisher and translator, in the above mentioned Magazine , in the years 1868-1870. Thanks to his fairy tales and stories, Hans Christian Andersen, 1805-75, is probably the most widely read author in the world today, but even in his own time he was read and known from Russia in the east to America in the west. His career from the lowest stratum of society in his native town of Odense in Funen via his problematic adaptation to the official and bourgeois circles in Copenhagen and further still until he became a familiar guest in the country mansions of Denmark, the palaces of kings and princes and the entire cultural stage of Europe provided him with material for many of his works and for no fewer than three autobiographies, the final version being Mit Livs Eventyr (1855, The Fairy Tale of My Life (with later supplements)). Modern editions of his correspondence and diaries have produced an unusually comprehensive insight into his life and his complex personality.

    Hans Christian Andersen (1805-1875) , Danish author and poet, wrote many poems, plays, stories and travel essays, but is best known for his fairy tales of which there are over one hundred and fifty, published in numerous collections during his life and many still in print today. His first collection of Fairy Tales, Told for Children was published in 1835. He broke new ground for Danish literature with his style and use of idiom, irony and humor, memorable characters and un-didactic moral teaching inspired by the primitive folk tales he had learned as a child. Though they do not all end happily his Fairy Tales resound with an authenticity that only unabashed sincerity can produce from a man who could still see through a childs eyes;

C. Andersen (April 2, 1805 – August 4, 1875) was a Danish author and poet. Although a prolific writer of plays, travel books, novels, and poems , Andersen is best remembered for his fairy tales, a literary genre he so mastered that his works have been immortalized in children's world literature. Andersen's popularity was not limited to children, however, as his fairy tales—called eventyrs, or "fantastic tales" in the Danish language—express universal themes that transcend age and nationality. Andersen's own life reads like a fairy tale. He was left fatherless at a young age; moved to Copenhagen to find his fortune as an actor at the age of fourteen, and improbably became a favorite of the king and upper class nobility. Andersen, who never married, seemed to be plagued by loneliness and feelings of being "different" throughout his life. He may have suffered from Marfan's syndrome, which can give a person an unusually large or misshapen appearance; he lived the life of a Victorian gentleman, and he projected his inner conflicts into often dark tales of hard-won redemption, such as the eponymous story "The Ugly Duckling." Hans Christian Andersen
    Hans Christian Andersen was born in Denmark on the 2nd of April 1805, into a poor family. Andersen very early showed signs of imaginative temperament, which was fostered by the indulgence and superstition of his parents. In 1816 his father died and he was left entirely to his own devices. Wishing to be an opera-singer, Andersen took matters into his own hands and started for Copenhagen in September 1819. There he was taken for a lunatic, snubbed at the theatres, and nearly reduced to starvation, but he was befriended by the musicians Christoph Weyse and Siboni, and afterwards by the poet Frederik Hoegh Guldberg (1771-1852). His voice failed, but he was admitted as a dancing student at the Royal Theatre. He grew idle, and lost the favor of Guldberg, but a new patron appeared in the person of Jonas Collin, the director of the Royal Theatre, who became Andersen's life-long friend. King Frederick VI was interested in the strange boy and sent him, free of charge, to the great grammar-school at Slagelse. Before he started for school he published his first volume

    Danish writer, author, and novelist Hans Christian Andersen was the first Danish author to emerge from the lowest class. He enjoyed fame as a novelist, dramatist, and poet, but his fairy tales are his greatest contribution to world literature.
    Early life
    Literary career
    In 1835 Andersen completed his first novel, The Improvisatore, and he published his first small volume of fairy tales, an event that attracted little attention at the time. The Improvisatore, Hans Christian Andersen.

    Fairy tales
    Andersen began his fairy-tale writing by retelling folk tales he had heard as a child from his grandmother and others. Soon, however, he began to create his own stories. Most of his tales are original. The first volumes written from 1835 to 1837 contained nineteen stories and were called Fairy Tales Told for Children.
