His fables are translated into more languages than any other books, outside of the Bible. Andersen is chiefly remembered for "The Ugly Duckling," "The Emperor's New Clothes" and "The Red Shoes." His only and consuming ambition was to become a writer held in esteem. Working towards that goal, he wrote prolifically and with versatility. It was his fairy tales, his "trifles," as he called them, that brought him world-wide recognition. Altogether, he wrote 156 tales which have been translated into more than a hundred languages. He also wrote three autobiographies. Andersen was perhaps better known than any other living writer, an international celebrity found in the company of his peers, and his work has been widely read ever since. His life was not that idyllic. In his family history, his dad, a cobbler, went insane and died when Hans was 11. His paternal grandmother was a pathological liar who had, in her youth, been jailed for repeatedly producing illegitimate children and her husband had a reputation as the town lunatic. One of his aunts apparently ran a brothel. He grew up in a one-room house in the slum area of Odense, usually playing by himself with puppets. The boy had few friends and spent much of his time alone with his homemade toys. As an adult, he was not particularly fond of children. He grew into an odd figure with huge feet and small blue eyes, a tall, delicate man, long and bony with a cadaverous face. With arms and legs disproportionately large for his body, he attracted nicknames that were descriptive, such as "stork" and "lamp post."

Aug. 4, 1875, Copenhagen), unique master of the fairy tale whose stories are famous throughout the world; he is also the author of plays, novels, poems, travel books, and several autobiographies. While many of these works are almost unknown outside Denmark, his fairy tales are among the most frequently translated works in all literary history. Andersen was born in a slum and had a difficult battle breaking through the rigid class structure of his time. The first significant help came from Jonas Collin, one of the directors of the Royal Theatre in Copenhagen, to which Andersen had gone as a youth in vain hopes of winning fame as an actor. Collin raised money to send him to school. Although school was an unhappy experience for Andersen because of an unpleasant headmaster, it allowed him to be admitted to the University of Copenhagen in 1828. The next year he produced what is considered his first important literary work, (1829; "A Walk from Holmen's Canal to the East Point of the Island of Amager in the Years 1828 and 1829"), a fantastic tale in the style of the German Romantic writer E.T.A. He was the son of an impoverished, sickly, twenty-two-year-old shoemaker and an alcoholic laundress, several years older than her husband. The entire family lived and slept in a single tiny room. Andersen's father apparently believed that he might be related to nobility, and according to scholars at the Hans Christian Andersen Center, his paternal grandmother told him that the family had once been in a higher social class. However, investigation proves these stories unfounded. The family apparently did have some connections to Danish royalty, but these were work-related. Nevertheless, the theory that Andersen was the illegitimate son of royalty persists in Denmark, bolstered by the fact that the Danish King took a personal interest in Andersen as a youth and paid for his education. The writer Rolf Dorset insists that not all options have been explored in determining Andersen's heritage. Andersen displayed great intelligence and imagination as a young boy, a trait fostered by the indulgence of his parents and by the superstition of his mother. He made himself a small toy-theatre and sat at home making clothes for his puppets, and reading all the plays that he could lay his hands upon; among them were those of Ludvig Holberg and William Shakespeare. Throughout his childhood, he had a passionate love for literature. He was known to memorize entire plays by Shakespeare and to recite them using his wooden dolls as actors.

The stories which have made his name a household word he underestimated, and strove after a dramatic success for which he was temperamentally unfitted. Oddly enough, he was not particularly fond of children, though he had an extraordinary capacity for amusing them; and it was this gift that led a friend to suggest his writing down the stories which he invented for their entertainment. Many of the tales are based on folk-lore, many are purely his own imagining, but all are told with a quaintness, humor, and fancy that have given the author a place by himself in letters.

Many of the stories popularized by Disney, such as The Little Mermaid , were the original works of Hans Christian Anderson. He was born in 1805, to very poor parents in Denmark. He died in 1870. Hans Christian Anderson knew at a young age that he wanted to be a writer. With his first visit to the theatre in his hometown of Odense, Denmark - he was hooked on fantasy and make believe. Before he became a writer, he attempted to be both a singer and an actor at the Royal Theatre in Copenhagen. He left his family to follow his dreams at the age of 14. Unfortunately, this was not going to work out for him and some of the elders at the theatre who took pity on him looked after him. They made sure that he was educated and took care of his needs which helped him to create success later in life. A few years later, he began writing plays. In 1822, the theatre manager became Hans Christian Anderson's guardian in a strange of turn of events that started his infamous writing career.
