APULEIUS, Lucius
The Roman writer who lived during the second century AD and who wrote The Golden Ass , arguably one of the earliest popular fictional accounts of witchcraft. It was first translated into English by William Adlington (1566) although the best known English translation is that of Robert Graves (1950).
Apuleius was born into a wealthy family in Madaura in North Africa and was much-travelled. He was, allegedly, a priest of Isis.
The main theme of The Golden Ass is the life and works of the Mother Goddess Demeter or Ceres, whose daughter Persephone (Proserpine) was lost to the . It is this saga and its tone of invocation to Mother Nature from the depth of misery and spiritual desolation which has formed the basis of many of the Earth Mystery Cults and on which many aspects of Wicca , as a nature religion, and the modern Western Mysteries are based.
PLEASE NOTE:
One of the major problems with 'defining' Paganism and/or its beliefs and practices is that it is an 'organic' movement, in that it is undergoing constant change and re-evaluation from within, and as such any

Apuleius, Lucius

Platonic philosopher, rhetorician, and author remembered for The Golden Ass a prose narrative that proved influential long after his death. The work, called Metamorphoses by its author, narrates the adventures of a young man changed by magic into an ass. Apuleius, who was educated at Carthage and Athens, traveled in the Mediterranean region and became interested in contemporary religious initiation rites, among them the ceremonies associated with worship of the Egyptian goddess Isis. Intellectually versatile and acquainted with works of both Latin and Greek writers, he taught rhetoric in Rome before returning to Africa to marry a rich widow, Aemilia Pudentilla. To meet her family's charge that he had practiced magic to win her affection, he wrote the Apologia ("Defense"), the major source for his biography. For The Golden Ass it is likely that he used material from the lost Metamorphoses by Lucius of Patrae, which is cited by some as the source for the brief extant Greek work on a similar theme
