Biographical Information Occupation, Sphere of Activity John Arbuthnot ( ), physician to Queen Anne ( ), was educated at Marischal College, Aberdeen and took his degree in Medicine at the University of St Andrews. Better known for his political satire and statistical analysis, he taught mathematics in London for a while, until he had the good fortune to be present when Prince George of Denmark ( ) fell ill. Arbuthnot's treatment cured the prince, and he was taken on in as physician extraordinary to Queen Anne. In , he became physician in ordinary to the monarch. Arbuthnot's first paper to the Royal Society was a statistical study of demographics. He also translated a work by Huygens ( ) about probability. Arbuthnot was at Queen Anne's bedside when she died, and under the new regime, Arbuthnot fell out of favour and ceased to be a courtier. Arbuthnot's paper, presented at the Royal Society in , is worth a closer look, for though it is crude, and far from conclusive; it is the first known example of statistical inference. Chronology of Probabilists and Statisticians Page James (Jacob) Bernoulli In Acta Eruditorum (1690), James Bernoulli , who began a long list of Mathematical contributions provided by the Bernoulli family, divulged solutions to a problem that he posed in the Journal des Scavans for 1685. The problem, as found in Todhunters Theory of Probability, is as follows: A and B play with a die, on condition that he who first throws an ace wins. First A throws once, then b throws once, then A throws twice, then B throws twice, then a throws three times, then B throws three times, and so on until ace is thrown. The chances involve infinite series which are not summed.
Bernoulli also wrote Ars Conjectandi, which was not published until 1713, eight years after his death. In Ars Conjectandi Bernoulli gave explanations and original proofs of the propositions introduced in Huygens De ratiociniis in Ludo Aleae. He also included combinations and permutations, which are still employed today, along with a series of problems on games of chance, and most importantly the Bernoulli theorem and a proof of the Binomial theorem. John Arbuthnot John Arbuthnot from Scotland published Of the Laws of Chance (1692), which was the first publication on probability to be written in English. It also included a translation of Huygens work and applications to games of chance. Arbuthnot also published

Book Description
Paris: J. Barois. 1742. Contemporary calf , with gilt spine and spine label . FIRST EDITION IN FRENCH of "An essay concerning the effects of air on human bodies" (London: 1733): "B. W. Richardson, who calls the work 'One of the most remarkable books in the history of medicine', says that Arbuthnot was far in advantage of his age" (Osler). "Born on the coast of Scotland not far from Montrose, Arbuthnot studied at Aberdeen until 1685 and subsequently moved to London where he taught mathematics. In 1694 he entered University College at Oxford and two years later received his medical degree at St. Andrews in Scotland. Arbuthnot entered the practice of medicine in London and became a noted man of letters as well as a successful physician. He was physician in ordinary to Queen Anne from 1705 until her death in 1714 and later to Queen Caroline. Arbuthnot was responsible for writing a series of anonymous political pamphlets in which he tried to convince the public that the war with France should be ended. A master of satire, he established and popularized John Bull as the symbol of England in literature and the popular press. Arbuthnot wrote the present work at a time when he suffered a period of bad health, and he comments, in the Preface, on the frequent delays he experienced. He acknowledged promising to write on air, rest, and motion in an earlier work but he now chose to perform his "Task imperfectly, rather than break my Word" (Preface). Sir Benjamin Ward Richardson stated that this essay is "one of the most remarkable books in the literature of medicine" (Disciples of Aesculapius. London, 1900. Vol. I, p. 220)." Heirs of Hippocrates 734 (London; 1733 ed.) XXIV, 320, [4] pp. Very nice copy. Small collection and duplicate stamp on
