INTRODUCTION:
This work is a continuation of the "Orlando Innamorato" of Matteo Maria Boiardo, which was left unfinished upon the author's death in 1494. It begins more or less at the point where Boiardo left it.
This is a brief synopsis of Boiardo's work, omitting most of the numerous digressions and incidental episodes associated with these events:
To the court of King Charlemagne comes Angelica (daughter to the king of Cathay, or India) and her brother Argalia. Angelica is the most beautiful woman any of the Peers have ever seen, and all want her. However, in order to take her as wife they must first defeat Argalia in combat. The two most stricken by her are Orlando and Ranaldo ("Rinaldo" in Rose).
When Argalia falls to the heathen knight Ferrau, Angelica flees with Orlando and Ranaldo in hot pursuit. Along the way, both Angelica and Ranaldo drink magic waters Angelica is filled with a burning love for Ranaldo, but Ranaldo is now indifferent.
Eventually, Orlando and Ranaldo arrive at Angelica's castle. Others also gather at Angelica's castle, including Agricane, King of Tartary; Sacripant, King of Circassia; Agramante, King of Africa and Marfisa ("Marphisa" in Rose), an Asian warrior-Queen. Except for Orlando and Ranaldo, all are heathen.

The illustrations were engraved by Malosso, Zuliani, Leonardis, Baratti, Daniotto and others after original designs by Novelli. The text was taken from an important recension, the so-called "Barotti edition" (Venice: Pitteri, 1766), which, according to Gamba, was "in molta reputazione, e fu utile allo stampatore Antonio Zatta, che la prese ad esemplare per la sua ristampa di Venezia, 1772." ARIOSTO, Lodovico. Dei suppositi commedia del divino Ludovico Ariosto nuova edizione dedicata all'illustrissima Signora Caterina Edwin. London: Tommaso Edlin, 1737. 12mo (130 × 71 mm.), pp. [ii], 116, ii (note), with engraved frontispiece armorial device of the Edwin family, printer’s device to title, ornamental woodcut head and tail-pieces and initials. Contemporary full calf, brown label, gilt raised bands, pretty gilt tooling to spine, edges red, marbled endpapers. Very slightly rubbed, upper hinge starting. Armorial library bookplate of Westport House. A very pleasing copy. An attractive early eighteenth-century London imprint of Ariosto's I Suppositi (‘The Pretenders’), a comic play based on Terence’s The Eunuch and Plautus's The Captives, which first appeared in prose 1509, with the lyrical version, found here, completed between 1529 and 1532. This edition was published in London by Thomas Edlin, who produced a series of classic and fashionable Italian works by writers including Ariosto, Boccaccio and Ongaro, of which a number were dedicated to English ladies of society. In this case, the dedicatee, is one Catherine Edwin, whose arms appear here as an attractive and unusual frontispiece.
