Ludovico Ariosto (1474-1533) Italian poet, remembered primarily for his ORLANDO FURIOSO, published in its final version in 1532. Ariosto's work was the most celebrated narrative poem of the Italian high Renaissance. Numerous artists have used its characters and incidents for paintings and musical works. Titian's (c. 1488-1576) painting Portrait of a Gentleman (c. 1512), formerly called Ariosto, presents a young, noble man, who seems to be at the same time approachable and formally restrained. What bit, what iron curb is to be found,
Or (could it be) what adamantine rein,
That can make wrath keep order and due bound,
And within lawful limits him contain?
When one, to whom the constant heart is bound
And linked by Love with solid bolt and chain,
We see, through violence or through foul deceit, With mortal damage or dishonour meet.
(from Orlando Furioso familiare , he was at present when the cardinal ate, he was ready to welcome him whenever he came home, helped him undress, and gave him drinks made of medicinal plants. Gradually Ariosto received higher duties. In 1513 Ariosto met Alessandra Benucci. After the death of her husband, Tito Strozzi, she became Ariosto's mistress.

Ludovico Ariosto September 8 July 6 ) was a Ferrarese poet, author of the epic poem Orlando furioso ), "Orlando Enraged". He was born at Reggio , in Emilia . His father was Niccolo Ariosto, commander of the citadel of Reggio. He followed a strong inclination to poetry from his earliest years, but was obliged by his father to study the lawa pursuit in which he lost five of the best years of his life. Allowed at last to read classics under Gregorio da Spoleto. But after a short time, studying which he read the best Latin authors, he was deprived of his teacher by Gregorio's removal to France as tutor of Francesco Sforza . Ariosto thus lost the opportunity of learning Greek, as he intended. His father dying soon after, he was compelled forego his literary occupations to undertake the management of the family, whose affairs were in disarray, and to provide for his nine brothers and sisters, one of whom was a cripple. He wrote, however, about this time some comedies in prose and lyrical pieces. Some of these attracted the notice of the cardinal Ippolito d'Este, who took the young poet under his patronage and appointed him one of the gentlemen of his household. This prince made a mockery of the character of a patron of literature. The only reward he gave the poet for

Ludovico Ariosto
Called "The Italian Homer". He was the son of Nicolo Ariosto, Governor of Reggio , and Daria Malaguzzi , born at Reggio in Emilia, 8 September, 1474; died at Ferrara , 6 June, 1533. Ludovico was the eldest of ten children, and on the death of his father , in 1500, became head of the family . When nine years of age he composed and acted in the fable "Tisbe". He gave five years to the study of law , and when twenty years old devoted himself to Greek and Latin authors. From 1503, or thereabouts, he was attached to the court of Cardinal Ippolito d'Este, but in 1518 he fell into disfavour with his patron . The Cardinal's brother, Duke Alfonso , then employed Ariosto in various diplomatic missions, in which he conducted himself with tact and skill. From 1522 to 1525 he governed the district of Garfagnana and freed it from the robber-bands which had infested it. In 1530, perhaps, he married a Florentine widow Alessandra Benucci . Ariosto wrote sonnetti and canzoni in the style of Petrarch , and five comedies of which the earliest," La Cassaria", was represented for the first time in 1509, and the latest, "La Scolastica" was completed by his brother Gabriel on the death of the poet. Of more importance are his seven
