Description
Matthew Arnold's Culture and Anarchy (1869), is one of the most celebrated works of social criticism ever written. It has become a reference point for all subsequent discussion of the relations between politics and culture. This edition establishes the authoritative text of this much-revised work, and places it alongside Arnold's three most important essays on political subjects. The introduction sets these works in the context of nineteenth-century intellectual and political history. This edition also contains a chronology of Arnold's life, a bibliographical guide and full notes on the names and historical events mentioned in the texts.

Culture and Anarchy: the Collini Edition Stefan Collini is surely foremost among today's Arnold scholars; his introduction to this volume earns the five stars along with the Arnold texts he has selected. While Collini does not think much of Arnold as a poet (which is probably not entirely fair), he is, no doubt, right in saying that as an essayist and social critic Arnold is most important to us today, and, quite possibly, was most important in his own time.

    Arnold, Matthew
Arnold, Matthew, , English poet and critic, son of the educator Dr. Thomas Arnold His first volume of poems, The Strayed Reveller, appeared in 1849; it was followed by Empedocles on Etna (1852). Dissatisfied with both works, he withdrew them from circulation. Poems Poems: Second Series appeared in 1855 and was followed by Merope: A Tragedy (1858) and New Poems Clough Matthew Arnold was also one of the most important literary critics of his age. From 1857 to 1867 he was Professor of Poetry at Oxford; during this time he wrote his first books of criticism, including On Translating Homer Essays in Criticism (1865; Ser. 2, 1888), and On the Study of Celtic Literature (1867). In Culture and Anarchy (1869) and Friendship's Garland (1871) he widened his field to include social criticism. Arnold's interest in religion resulted in St. Paul and Protestantism

Arnold, Matthew
From New World Encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation search Previous (Matter) Next (Matthew C. Perry) Matthew Arnold Matthew Arnold (December 24, 1822 – April 15, 1888) was an English poet and critic of the Victorian age. He is often remembered as the third greatest poet of his generation, behind Alfred Lord Tennyson and Robert Browning . Arnold himself was aware that, though a talented poet, he was not the great poet of his age, and at the height of his career he abandoned poetry entirely, turning instead to writing literary criticism. This shift in focus would be fortuitous not only for Arnold, but the field of literary criticism as well. He is often considered to be the founding father of academic criticism in English, and the principles for literary criticism which he advanced—objectivity, attention to detail, and an exclusive focus on the poem rather than the poet —would become the foundation for professional literary criticism, setting the stage for the rise of Formalist criticism in universities and colleges the world over. Arnold was also a major cultural critic, and his views on the moral degeneration of his times are often seen today as strikingly prescient. During a time when general optimism reigned, and poets could write, without irony, such lines as "God's in, his heaven—/All's right with the world!" Arnold sounded a rather dour note of concern over the direction in which his society and Western society in general, was moving. He became a vigorous defender of "high culture" and classic literary education when such institutions were rapidly crumbling in the face of changing times; and, although his views on culture remain controversial, it is undeniable that his work in cultural criticism was directly responsible for reinvigorating literary and artistic scholarship in the nineteenth century.

Although it was completely an accident the police charged him with attempted capital murder. We didn't have much money, but Mr. Arnold agreed to try and investigate the case and see if he could get the case dropped. He was able to convince the grand jury to no bill the case and my grandson was let go. I would recomend Mr. Arnold to anyone. Report Abuse Was this review helpful to you?
