JOSEPH E. BADGER, JR. (1848-1909) Tell me the tales that to me were so dear,
Long, long ago, long, long ago.
THOMAS HAYNES BAYLY: Old Song Upon his return to Bellemont, some six months later, Joe went back to school part time, but he preferred hunting and camping, going away on his horse (a present from his brother-in-law, Captain Weston) for weeks at a time. In the spring of 1864 Joe's father, now Chief Clerk in the Quartermaster's Department at Jefferson City, Missouri, and away from home most of the time, sold the Bellemont property, and the family moved to Jefferson City, where Joe was taken into the Quartermaster's office as a clerk without pay. In 1867, almost six feet tall although only 19 years of age, he was a student in Bryant's Business College in St. Joseph, Missouri, and very shortly thereafter began contributing sketches to the New York Weekly. His first long story for Beadle was Dime Novel No. 203, "The Masked Guide," published May 10, 1870; and thereafter, for a long time, he furnished them with a story every month or so. He also, about this time, established a reputation as a puzzler and puzzle solver, signing his contributions "Beau K."

During the financial year 2003-2004 it is estimated that the Library will acquire over 300,000 collection items in a large range of formats.
    Australian Printed Materials
The National Library continues to acquire many printed works associated with the European discovery and exploration of Australia.

"Once more, Sam Sedley," he cried. "I give your wife a chance for her life. The boy has sealed his own fate and must go with you. Will you two yield if the woman is allowed to go free?" "Yes, yes," cried Sedley, eagerly; "will you promise that she shall be allowed to go, and that no man shall lay a finger on her." Unlikely as this exchange may seem to the modern imagination, this episode is found in the pages of Border Vengeance; or, The Nighthawk's Daughter , a dime novel written by W. J. Hamilton (a pseudonym of C. Dunning Clark) and published by Beadle and Adams in 1873. A family of settlers has climbed to the roof of their house, driven there by a band of marauders known as the Nighthawks. When Sam Sedley, the patriarch, and his son, John, wound several of their adversaries and refuse to surrender, the Nighthawks threaten to burn the house and its occupants. In true dime-novel tradition Mrs. Sedley's stirring words dispel her husband's uncertainty and enable him to hold out until rescue arrives at just the moment when all hope seems lost. Of course, the reader has been breathlessly turn ing the pages, smelling the Nighthawks' smoky torches and waiting with the Sedleys for help. Though such courage in the face of torture was admirable, it was by no means unusual. The women of frontier dime novels were a hardy lot. Armed with religious conviction and faith in their men, dime-novel women faced kidnapping by Indians, aspersions on their integrity, death of family and friends, prairie fire, wolves, and buffalo stampedes. The intense drama is still able to kindle the modern

    Historical Note
Dime novels first appeared on the American literary scene in 1860 with the publication of Beadles Dime Novels No. 1, "Malaeska, the Indian Wife of the White Hunter," by Ann S. Stephens (1813-1886). Numerous dime and half-dime publications soon flooded the market. Irwin Beadle was the first publisher to issue cheap paper covered novels in continuous series. The term dime novels had little reference to the price at which they booklets were sold, but it was applied especially to any "sensational detective" or "blood-and-thunder" novel in pamphlet form. Erasmus Beadle (1821-1894) published popular songbooks and a number of dime novels, with heroes such as Nick Carter and Deadwood Dick. His "Dime Novels" monopolized the popular literature field for much of the latter half of the 19 th century. Subject matter for the stories included the historical frontier of early New York, Ohio and Kentucky, the contemporary frontier of the prairie and of gold mining in the west, sea stories, historical tales of the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812 and of the colonial wars. During the 1870s through the 1890s, city stories (stories of street boys and gamins who made their way up in the world) flourished, particularly those of Horatio Alger, Jr. Beadle issued at different times about twenty-five series of novels, seven story papers and magazines, and innumerable handboks, songbooks, dialogues, speakers, baseball books, and so on.
