The son of a French father and an English mother, Barbusse was born in Asnières-sur-Seine, France in 1873. Although he grew up in a small town, he left for Paris in 1889 at age 16. In 1914, at the age of 41, he enlisted in the French Army and served against Germany in World War I . Invalided out of the army three times, Barbusse would serve in the war for 17 months, until the end of 1915, when he was permanently moved into a clerical position due to pulmonary damage, exhaustion, and dysentery. Barbusse first came to fame with the publication of his novel Le Feu (translated as Under Fire ) in 1916, which was based on his experiences during World War I. By this time, Barbusse had become a pacifist, and his writing demonstrated his growing hatred of

Could this be because of his Communist politics or because he lived out his late years in the Soviet Union? Barbusse was born outside Paris and joined the artistic circles of that city, producing mainly poetry and journalism at first. His novel L'enfer (1908, translated as Inferno or Hell ) however sparked a scandal as an account of voyeurism when it was released in English. In the intensely realistic story, a young man in a Paris boardinghouse spies on his neighbours through a hole in his bedroom wall, witnessing marriage, adultery, birth, death, lesbianism and other all human behaviours. When the war broke out in 1914, despite being an established writer, in poor health, a pacifist and forty-one years old, Barbusse enlisted in the French ranks where he served in the front trenches. His lungs were damaged by an explosion but he kept returning to the front until he was finally invalided out.

"Under Fire: the story of a squad"
Once more I see gathered and grouped, soiled by contact with the
earth and dirty smoke, the familiar faces and poses of those who
have not been separated since the beginning, chained and riveted
together in fraternity. But there is less dissimilarity than at the
beginning in the appearance of the cave-men.
Papa Blaire displays in his well-worn mouth a set of new teeth, so
resplendent that one can see nothing in all his poor face except those gayly-dight jaws. The great event of these foreign teeth's establishment, which he is taming by degrees and sometimes uses for eating, has profoundly modified his character and his manners. He is rarely besmeared with grime, he is hardly slovenly. Now that he has become handsome he feels it necessary to become elegant. For the moment he is dejected, becausea miraclehe cannot wash himself. Deeply sunk in a corner, he half opens a lack-luster eye, bites and masticates his old soldier's mustachenot long ago the only ornament on his faceand from time to time spits out a hair.

WWI in Fiction and Memoirs: A Selected List Fiction Aldington, Richard. Death of a Hero, 1929.
The title is bitterly ironic. A shell-shocked British Army captain deliberately steps into the line of fire on the eve of the Armistice and his friend, the narrator, traces the misplaced notions of heroism that forced him to this end. Anthony, Patricia. Flanders, 1998.
The story of a Texas boy at the Front in France told through his letters home. The real story is between the lines. Barbusse, Henri. Under Fire, 1917
An epic account of the life of an ordinary soldier in the French army filled with grim details. Barker, Pat. Regeneration, 1991. The Eye in the Door, 1993. The Ghost Road, 1995
A trilogy that encompasses every aspect of the war - the Front, the home front, asylums for the shell shocked, even the Irish rebellion - told with great drama and compassion. All characters, historical and fictional, are well portrayed but especially brilliant are Dr. Rivers, the humane psychiatrist, and Billy Prior, the soldier who embodies all the ambiguities of war. Booker award winner and among the best WWI books written.
