Barbusse, Henri
(b Le Feu Under Fire, 1917), a firsthand witness of the life of French soldiers in World War I. Barbusse belongs to an important lineage of French war writers who span the period 1910 to 1939, mingling war memories with moral and political meditations. Barbusse started as a neo-Symbolist poet, with Pleureuses (1895; "Mourners"), and continued as a neo-Naturalist novelist, with L'Enfer The Inferno, 1918). In 1914 he volunteered for the infantry, was twice cited for gallantry, and finally was discharged because of his wounds in 1917. Barbusse's Le Feu; journal d'une escouade, awarded the Prix Goncourt, is one of the few works to survive the proliferation of wartime novels. Its subtitle, Story of a Squad, reveals the author's double purpose: to relate the collective experience of the poilus' s (French soldiers') life in the trenches and to denounce war. The horror of bloodshed and destruction led Barbusse to an indictment of society as a whole. He became a pacifist, then a militant Communist and a member of international peace organizations. Henri Barbusse (1873-1935) was the author of Le Feu Under Fire ), a classic memoir of wartime service in the French Army during the First World War. Born on 17 May 1873 in Asnières, Barbusse's early career saw him steer a course first as a neo-Symbolist poet, publishing Pleureuses Mourners ) in 1895, and then as a neo-Naturalist novelist, publishing L'Enfer The Inferno ) in 1908. However Barbusse gained fame - and notoriety - with the publication of Le Feu in 1916 (published as Under Fire in English), in what was one of the earliest memoirs to critique the French rationale for war and to establish a firmly anti-war stance. For all that he had voluntarily enlisted for wartime service in 1914 his memoir emphasised the lamentable suffering and disillusion of the average French soldier. A widespread international success, his book went on to win the Prix Goncourt. Wounded in action and by now a committed pacifist, Barbusse was formally discharged from the army in 1917.

SUMMARY Based on his own experience of the Great War, Henri Barbusseas novel is a powerful account of one of the greatest horrors mankind has inflicted on itself. For the group of ordinary men in the French Sixth Battalion, thrown together from all over France and longing for home, war is simply a matter of survival, lightened only by the arrival of their rations or a glimpse of a pretty girl or a brief reprieve in the hospital. Reminiscent of classics like Hemingwayas "A Farewell to Arms" and Remarqueas "All Quiet on the Western Front," "Under Fire" (originally published in French as "La Feu") vividly evokes life in the trenchesathe mud, stench, and monotony of waiting while constantly fearing for oneas life in an infernal and seemingly eternal battlefield. [Login to edit this page] The son of a French father and an English mother, Barbusse was born in Asnières-sur-Seine, France in 1873. Although he grew up in a small town, he left for Paris in 1889 at age 16. In 1914, at the age of 41, he enlisted in the French Army and served against Germany in World War I. Invalided out of the army three times, Barbusse would serve in the war for 17 months, until the end of 1915, when he was permanently moved into a clerical position due to pulmonary damage, exhaustion, and dysentery. Barbusse first came to fame with the publication of his novel Le Feu (translated as Under Fire) in 1916, which was based on his experiences during World War I. By this time, Barbusse had become a pacifist, and his writing demonstrated his growing hatred of militarism. Le Feu drew criticism at the time for its harsh naturalism, but won the Prix Goncourt. In January, 1918 he left France and moved to the city of Moscow, Russia where he married a Russian woman and joined the Bolshevik Party. The novel Clarté is about an office worker who, while serving in the army, begins to realize that the imperialist war is a crime. The Russian Revolution had significant influence on the life and work of Barbusse. He joined the French Communist Party in 1923 and later traveled back to the Soviet Union. His later works, Manifeste aux Intellectuels (Elevations) (1930) and others show a more revolutionary standpoint. Of these, the 1921 Le Couteau entre les dents (The Knife Between My Teeth) marks Barbusse's siding with Bolshevism and the October Revolution. Barbusse characterized the birth of Soviet Russia as "the greatest and most beautiful phenomenon in world history." The book "Light from the Abyss" (1919) and the collection of articles "Words of a Fighting Man" (1920) contain calls for the overthrow of capitalism. In 1925, Barbusse published "Chains", showing history as the unbroken chain of suffering of people and their struggle for freedom and justice. In the publicistic book "The Butchers" he exposes the White Terror in the Balkan countries.

37. Barbusse (Henri)
Light / Barbusse, Henri, 18731935
http://www.proverbes-citations.com/barbusse.htm
