    CHAPTER XXX
“THE LADY PORTRAYED” “It has taken you long, Miss Gray. I nearly sent Simpson up, to find out what had happened.” “I am glad you did not do that, Mr. Dalmain. Simpson would have found me weeping on the studio floor; and to ask his assistance under those circumstances, would have been more humbling than inquiring after the fly in the soup!” Garth turned quickly in his chair. The artist-ear had caught the tone which meant comprehension of his work. “Weeping!” he said. “Why?” “Because,” answered Nurse Rosemary, “I have been entranced. These pictures are so exquisite. They stir one’s deepest depths. And yet they are so pathetic–ah, SO pathetic; because you have made a plain woman, beautiful.” Garth rose to his feet, and turned upon her a face which would have blazed, had it not been sightless.

It features representative examples of work by more than 80 artists who were active during the "golden age" of commercial cover design. The catalog essays approach the various design paradigms from their aesthetic influences and social contexts. The printed edition of the catalog is divided into several sections on influences and trends in cover design, with more detailed descriptions of the books than you see in the checklist. These sections identify pictorial, figurative, and decorative motifs, and show how they were approached by different designers. There are 16 sections, including The Oriental Influence The Motor Car Hits the Cover (Cover Designs of Automobiles Before 1911)

Florence L. Barclay
Profile
The novelist Florence Louisa Charlesworth was born on 2 December 1862. Her father was the Reverend Samuel Charlesworth who was the Rector of Limpsfield, Surrey. The family, consisting of her mother and father, her elder sister Annie, Florence and her younger sister Maud, moved to London in 1869. Florence is known to have been kept busy visiting the poor and singing at religious gatherings, something that stood her in good stead in her married life. In March 1881, at the age of eighteen, she married the Reverend Charles W. Barclay. During their honeymoon touring the Holy Land it is claimed that they discovered the true mouth of Jacob's Well, where Christ is thought to have rested. She became an accomplished public speaker and was to tour America giving lectures on her find in Palestine. The couple settled to parish and family life and she bore eight children. Following ill health she turned to writing and her first work, from 1905, was a short novel called The wheels Of time . She sent this and her subsequent novel The rosary to her sister Maud who was living in America. It was Maud who arranged for their publication.
