Max Beerbohm (1872-1956)
Dandies and Dandies
But the dandy, innowise violating the laws of fashion, can make more subtle symbols of his personality. More subtle these symbols are for the very reason that they are effected within the restrictions which are essential to an art. Chastened of all flamboyance, they are from most men occult, obvious, it may be, only to other artists or even only to him they symbolise. Nor will the dandy express merely a crude idea of his personality, as does, for example, Mr. Hall Caine, dressing himself always and exactly after one pattern. Every day as his mood has changed since his last toilet, he will vary the colour, texture, form of his costume. Fashion does not rob him of free will. It leaves him liberty of all expression. Every day there is not one accessory, from the butterfly that alights above his shirt front to the jewels planted in his linen, that will not symbolise the mood that is in him or the occasion of the coming day.
`I conceive he is too nervous to be on the course,' my friend replied. `They say he has plunged up to the hilt on to-day's running.'
His lordship was indeed there, fingering feverishly the sinuous ribands of the tape-machine. I sat at a little distance, watching him. Two results straggled forth within an hour, and, at the second of these, I saw with wonder Lord X.'s linen actually flush for a moment and then turn deadly pale. I looked again and saw that his boots had lost their lustre. Drawing nearer, I found that grey hairs had begun to show themselves in his raven coat. It was very painful and yet, to me, very gratifying. In the cloak-room, when I went for my own hat and cane, there was the hat with the broad brim, and (lo!) over its iron- blue surface little furrows had been ploughed by Despair. Rouen, 1896.

Creative Quotations from . . . Max Beerbohm
(1872-1956) born on Aug 24 English "essayist, caricaturist, parodist". "The Incomparable Max wrote many elegant essays; the novel "Zuleika Dobson" 1911, and a pictorial volume of caricatures." Share Only mediocrity can be trusted to be always at its best.
People who insist on telling their dreams are among the terrors of the breakfast table. "Anything that is worth doing has been done frequently. Things hitherto undone should be given, I suspect, a wide berth." It is easier to confess a defect than to claim a quality. "Of course we all know that Morris was a wonderful all-round man, but the act of walking round him has always tired me."
Published Sources for the above Quotations:

It's 1:53. Soon it will be two o'clock. Then, at last, 2:10, the moment I have been waiting for. To be here, in this spot in London, on this day at ten past two, I have traveled 4,000 miles and planned for thirty-four and a half years.
Thirty-four and a half years ago I was sitting in a nearly empty high school classroom in Philadelphia under the spell of my English teacher and drama coach, D. G. Rosenbaum. I idolized Mr. Rosenbaum (or "Rosey," as we Drama Society brats called him). He had a dark, resonant voice. He had a widow's peak and a moustache and goatee that made him look like Mephistopheles; he hinted that his ancestors were Scottish warlocks. He wore trim black suits, blood-red vests, and pince-nez. He smoked black cigarettes with gold tips, and made them vanish by sleight of hand when the principal was nearby. Rosey knew psychoanalysis. He quoted Aristotle, Kenneth Burke, and Ezra Pound in everyday conversation. He ordered his milkshakes spiked with raw eggs.

    Commentary from The Weird Review.
    http://www.violetbooks.com/REVIEWS/rbadac-soames.html
Max Beerbohm's devilish classic "Enoch Soames"
    commentary by rbadac
This story is everywhere; you can hardly throw a rock without hitting an anthology that features it. It most recently surfaces in Nightshade The Wandering Jew in its entirety. THX-1138; like The ideal book by which to obtain this tale is Max Beerbohm's Seven Men Saturday Evening Post Besides Robert Phillips' workmanlike Nightshade: 20th Century Ghost Stories (1999) cited by rbadac, the tale is also to be found in Philip Van Doren Stern's commonly encountered The Moonlight Traveler Speak of the Devil (1945), Joseph Margolies' easily found (1946), Basil Davenport's uniformly well-chosen Deals with the Devil (1958), Alberto Manguel's vastly superior international selection Black Water (1983), Frank J. Finamore's Devilish Doings The Book of Fantasy (1989) giving further evidence of the tale's international influence. Watch for these or similar books to turn up in the Catalog of Vintage Weird Fictions For Sale. The most horrible but instantaneous way to access "Enoch Soames" is via the web. I'd recommend a trip to your local library to check out a Real Book before settling for an Enoch Soames E-Text,
