LUDWIG VAN BEETHOVEN
Born (baptized): December 17, 1770. Bonn, Germany
Died: March 26, 1827. Vienna, Austria
In his own words...

"I carry my thoughts about with me for a long time... before writing them down... once I have grasped a theme. I shall not forget it even years later. I change many things, discard others, and try again and again until I am satisfied; then, in my head... [the work] rises, it grows, I hear and see the image n front of me from every angle... and only the labor of writing it down remains... I turn my ideas into tones that resound, roar, and rage until at last they stand before me in the form of notes." German composer. Often considered a transitional figure from the Classical to the Romantic era.
Ludwig van Beethoven is often described by musicians as a "giant straddling two styles": the Classical and the Romantic. Indeed, it is a testimony to Beethoven's place in history that he is claimed for both periods. Whether Beethoven was a Classical or a Romantic composer, however, is beside the point. Instead, we might best view him as a new composer for a new age an age that is reflected in both musical as well as the nonmusical worlds.
Haydn
and Mozart lived during a time of nascent ideals of liberty and two major revolutions. They also lived in a world of royal patronage, in which Haydn flourished but Mozart floundered. In contrast, Beethoven came of age as an artist when the consequences of revolutions had to be confronted and when the burden of patronage had already shifted to the less reliable mechanisms of the commercial sphere: publications and concerts proceeds, supplemented by sporadic noble patronage. It was a far more disorderly world for Beethoven, yet one full of exciting potential.

Beethoven played viola in various orchestras, becoming friends with other players such as Antoine Reicha, Nikolaus Simrock, and Franz Ries, and began taking on composition commissions. As a member of the court chapel orchestra, he was able to travel some and meet members of the nobility, one of whom, Count Ferdinand Waldstein, would become a great friend and patron to him. Beethoven moved to Vienna in 1792 to study with Haydn; despite the prickliness of their relationship, Haydn's concise humor helped form Beethoven's style. Haydn composer, who gave lessons to Beethoven of 1792 to 1794, date on which goes back to London.Haydn taught Beethoven the counterpoint.
The relationship between the two men was very variable, but Beethoven finally remained very attached to Haydn.

Jump to: navigation search Beethoven, Ludwig van (1770-1827): German, Composer. Ludwig van Beethoven is known for having extended the Viennese Classical tradition of Haydn, Franz Joseph and Mozart. His later works, particularly when considered in the context of the emotional turmoil under which they were conceived, have granted him the reputation of the most dominant musical figure of the nineteenth century. Although his position as a precursor to the Romantic movement in music is heavily contended, his influence on future generations of composers is unquestionable. Appassionata Sonata, the string quartets dedicated to Count Razumovsky, the Fourth Symphony, and the Violin Concerto. Beethoven’s reputation as a composer was only equalled by his popularity as a pianist and improviser, and he supported himself economically primarily through his playing and teaching. By 1806, however, Beethoven was forced to give up regular public performance due to an increasing deafness which had been getting progressively worse since 1795. By 1818, Beethoven was almost entirely deaf, although by 1822, he was beginning composition on his enthusiastically-received Ninth Symphony (perf.1823). The famous “Heiligenstadt Testament” of 1802, a letter addressed to his two brothers, expresses Beethoven’s increasing despair at the effect of deafness upon his professional and social life. The despair and introspection occasioned by Beethoven’s deafness is often credited for the strength of emotion which now marked his musical compositions. During this same period, Beethoven also expressed a marked interest in politics; his grief at the death of the reformist Emperor

In choosing to publish performances of these four Beethoven piano sonatas, I have deliberately included nicknames or descriptive appellations in all their titles. For two of these sonatas we have time-honoured nicknames ready to hand, one particularly fortunate (Op.57) , the other less so (Op.27 No.2) , although neither deriving from the composer. Op.90 The fact that Beethoven dedicated the work to Lichnowsky without publishing the titles has caused many commentators to suggest that they are best forgotten and that the work should be enjoyed as pure music in its own right. I disagree completely. raison d'tre In providing the Immortal beloved nickname to Op.101

Biography
German musician and composer, a misanthrope from youth with bad disposition and manner, temper and melancholy. In spite of this, he had many friends whom he used. His outer life was uneventful, while his inner life was one of turmoil and pathos. A virtuoso pianist at 18-20, he faced poverty, illness and growing deafness by age 30-32. He moved often. Beethoven loved unattainable women, such as the great love of his life in late 1811, a married woman. He never married, though he wanted a family. When his brother died in 2/1816, the court granted him guardianship of his nephew Karl. Died on 3/26/1827, 5:45 PM, Vienna, Austria. Lilith Mageborn writes, "Beethoven didn't die *directly* of lead poisoning. He died of an infection resulting from the last of four surgeries to reduce abdominal swelling and to drain abdominal fluid - which may have resulted from lead

Children of that era were usually baptized the day after their birth, but there is no documentary evidence that this occurred in Beethoven's case. It is known that his family and his teacher Johann Albrechtsberger celebrated his birthday on December 16. While the known facts support the probability that December 16, 1770 was Beethoven's date of birth, this cannot be stated with certainty.) was a German composer and pianist , generally regarded as one of the greatest figures in the history of music. He was the preeminent figure in the transitional period between the Classical and Romantic eras of Western classical music, profoundly influenced by the ideals of the French Revolution , only to be disillusioned with the betrayal of those ideals during the Napoleonic era. His reputation and genius have inspired—and in many cases intimidated—ensuing generations of composers, musicians, and audiences. Beethoven's personal life offers a startling counterpoint to his majestic compositions. Of irritable temperament and physically unimposing, the composer frequently quarreled with family members, colleagues, and patrons. Beethoven was deeply frustrated in his relations with women and never married. He also suffered serious physical infirmities and chronic pain, perhaps most significantly the progressive loss of hearing, leading to total deafness during the period of writing some of his most sublime works.
