The town is rural, with a concentration of several homes and businesses in Benson Village, at the intersection of Stage Road and Lake Road.
edit Government
As is the case with many towns in rural New England, the town's government enjoys a degree of autonomy from the county and employs only a few essential service-providers including an elected Selectboard, a town clerk/treasurer, a road crew, and other municipal positions. Small town committees as well as the annual town meeting set the protocols of town policy with particular focus on the town's annual budget. Due to an idiosyncrasy in the redistricting process, it is also the only town in the state of Vermont to share a representative in the state legislature with a town in another county (Will Stevens, I-Shoreham). citation needed

The town employs a town constable, however most law enforcement is handled by the Rutland County Sheriff's department and/or the

5. "Increase Your Height " By Benson, E. F. (Edward Frederic), 1867-1940 132/134

Queen Lucia by Benson, E. F. (Edward Frederic), 1867-1940
A word from our supporters: File extension 3G2 "o.b." Increase Your Height But today the warm inflowing tide of spring seemed to renovate the muddy flats, setting the weeds, that had lain dank and dispirited, a-floating again on the return of the water. No one could quite resist the magic of the season, and Georgie, who had intended out of mere politeness to go to see the earliest of Perdita's stupid flowers (having been warned of its epiphany by telephone from The Hurst) found, when he set foot outside his house on that warm windy morning, that it would be interesting to stroll across the green first, and see if there was any news. All the news he had really cared about for the last two months was news from America, of which he had a small packet done up in a pink riband. After getting rid of Piggy, he went to the newspaper shop, to get his "Times," which most unaccountably had not arrived, and the sight of "Todd's News" in its yellow cover stirred his drowsy interest. Not one atom of light had ever been thrown on that extraordinary occurrence when Robert bought the whole issue, and though Olga never failed to enquire, he had not been able to give her the slightest additional information. Occasionally he set a languid trap for one of the Quantocks, but they never by any chance fell into it. The whole affair must be classed with problems like the origin of evil, among the insoluble mysteries of life. It was possible to get letters by the second post an hour earlier than the house-to-house delivery by calling at the office, and as Georgie was waiting for his "Times," Mrs Quantock came hurrying out of the post-office with a small packet in her hands, which she was opening as she walked. She was so much absorbed by this that she did not see Georgie at all, though she passed quite close to him, and soon after shed a registered envelope. At that the "old familiar glamour" began to steal over him again, and he found himself wondering with intensity what it contained.

Early treatment of Alzheimer's in fiction There is a great deal of pro-British, anti-German proganda in this novel, which I found off-putting. But it was still of great interest to me in that it features a character who is clearly suffering from Alzheimer's. The symptoms are accurately and vividly described and it is clear the woman has Alzheimer's as opposed to the many other forms of senility. This is something I've never come across in any of Benson's writing before.

E.F.Benson was born at Wellington College on July 24th 1867.  Fred, as he was known to his family, was the fifth child born to Edward and Mary Benson. His father was the first Master of Wellington College, which had been established in 1858, under the guiding hand of Prince Albert.  In 1873 the family moved to Lincoln, where Edward had been appointed Chancellor. Then in 1876 came the move to Cornwall, when Edward become the first Bishop of Truro. E.F.Benson started his education at Temple Grove, near East Sheen in Surrey, just after Easter 1878. In September 1881, he began at Marlborough College and remained there until 1887. These were to be amongst the happiest days of his life, and he wrote about them, and his days at Cambridge, in three books; David Blaize (1916) and David of King’s (1924), both of which were very popular during and after the First War, and

Benson, E. F. (1867-1940) Born in 1867 to Edward White Benson, Headmaster of Wellington College, later Bishop of Truro, then Archbishop of Canterbury, and Mary Sidgwick, whom W. E. Gladstone once called "the cleverest woman in Europe," Edward Frederick Benson enjoyed a privileged upbringing within his elite Victorian family and, like his siblings, fell easily into prolific writing. By the time of his death in 1940, he had written over one hundred books: tales of the supernatural, books on winter sports (he excelled at figure skating), biographies, autobiographies, but most of all novels, all of them enriched by his tenacious memory, his satiric wit, and his anecdotal charm.
