Millennial Moments Search: Writers and Writing Writers and Writing presents profiles of novelists, poets, and playwrights from any culture and any age. Literature has great power–the power to transcend and the power to transform. Writers give voice to the spirit of the age. They teach not only the particulars but the universals of human experience. They shock sensibilities, pierce emotional barriers, envision future possibilities. Through the work of writers we confront our shadow selves–or take inspiration to become the very best we can become. Whether a writer’s imaginative realm is based on fantasy or realism, his or her artistic territory is nothing less than the human heart.

Beecher, Henry Ward
No emotion, any more than a wave, can long retain its own individual form.
Beyle, Marie Henri

Women prefer emotions to reasoning.
Cocteau, Jean

Emotion resulting from a work of art is only of value when it is not obtained by sentimental blackmail.
Collins, Joseph

By starving emotions we become humorless, rigid and stereotyped; by repressing them we become literal, reformatory and holier-than-thou; encouraged, they perfume life; discouraged, they poison it.
Connolly, Cyril

A life based on reason will always require to be balanced by an occasional bout of violent and irrational emotion, for instinctual drives must be satisfied
Dalai Lama
One can overcome the forces of negative emotions, like anger and hatred, by cultivating their counterforces, like love and compassion. de Balzac, Honore How natural it is to destroy what we cannot possess, to deny what we do not understand, and to insult what we envy! There influential relatives obtained a place for him at the ministry of war. In 1800 he became a dragoon in Napoleon's army, and the invasion of Italy took him to Milan. By 1802 he was back in Paris, where he pursued the amorous adventures that continued to interest him all his life. He read widely and kept notes and journals, which have been published. He again served with Napoleon's army in the disastrous Russian campaign (1812). After Napoleon's fall in 1814, Stendhal went to Milan, remaining there until 1820. There he began his literary career. In (1814) and in Rome, Naples, et Florence en 1817 (1817), he borrowed facts freely from other writers, but the point of view and wit were his own. His books were better known in England than in France, and from c.1817 he wrote for British journals. In this period, when he was suffering from his most genuine and most unhappy love affair, he wrote De l'amour (1822), a psychological analysis of love that predates Freud. Stendhal's first novel
