Zitkala Sa (Gertrude Simmons Bonnin) Gertrude Simmons was born in 1874 on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota, the daughter of a white man and a full-blooded Sioux mother (Ellen Tate Iyohinwin). She lived on the reservation until the age of 8, when she chose to attend the White's Manual Labor Institute in Wabash, Indiana, a school funded by Quakers. She attended other schools, including Earlham College (in Indiana) and the Boston Conservatory of Music (where she co-wrote an opera with William Hanson in 1913). She eventually accepted a teaching position at the Carlisle Indian School in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, a school dedicated to the proposition that "We must kill the savage to save the man." As a writer, she adopted the pen name Zitkala Sa (Red Bird) and began publishing articles in 1900 that were critical of America's treatment of Native Americans.
