Borrow, George (Henry)
(b. July 5, 1803, East Dereham, Norfolk, Eng.d. July 26, 1881, Oulton Broad), English traveler, linguist, and one of the most imaginative prose writers of the 19th century. Borrow was the son of a professional soldier and led a wandering childhood as his father's regiment was moved around the British Isles; these peregrinations inspired memorable passages in his masterpiece, Lavengro (1851). Between 1815 and 1818 he attended grammar school at Norwich, and it was here that he began to acquire a smattering of many languages. An attempt to apprentice him to the law proved unsuccessful, and early in 1824 he decided to try his luck in London. There he remained for about a year. At length his health collapsed, and he went on a long bohemian pilgrimage through rural England. His adventures, including many contacts with Gypsies, provided some of the background for Lavengro and The Romany Rye (1857). He strayed back again, however, to Norwich, where he completed Romantic Ballads

Wild Wales: Its People, Language and Scenery by Borrow, George Henry Page 1 Wild Wales: Its People, Language and Scenery
INTRODUCTORY
But it is not for its scenery alone that Wales is deserving of being visited; scenery soon palls unless it is associated with remarkable events, and the names of remarkable men. Perhaps there is no country in the whole world which has been the scene of events more stirring and remarkable than those recorded in the history of Wales. What other country has been the scene of a struggle so deadly, so embittered, and protracted as that between the Cumro and the Saxon? - A struggle which did not terminate at Caernarvon, when Edward Longshanks foisted his young son upon the Welsh chieftains as Prince of Wales; but was kept up till the battle of Bosworth Field, when a prince of Cumric blood won the crown of fair Britain, verifying the olden word which had cheered the hearts of the Ancient Britons for at least a thousand years, even in times of the darkest distress and gloom:-
"But after long pain Repose we shall obtain, When sway barbaric has purg'd us clean; And Britons shall regain Their crown and their domain, And the foreign oppressor be no more seen."

Letters Of George Borrow To The British And Foreign Bible So... by Borrow, George Henry Page 1 Letters of George Borrow to the British and Foreign Bible Society
LETTER: February 10th, 1833
To the Rev. J. Jowett WILLOW LANE, ST. GILES, NORWICH, FEB. 10TH, 1833.
What must they think, for example, on coming to the sentence . . . APKAI ETCHIN NI POROFIYAT, I.E. the prophet of the Lord of heaven? For the last word in the Mandchou quotation being a modification of a Greek word, with no marginal explanation, renders the whole dark to a Tartar. [Greek text which cannot be recorded]; APKAI I know, and ETCHIN I know, but what is POROFIYAT, he will say. Now in Tartar, there are words synonymous with our seer, diviner, or foreteller, and I feel disposed to be angry with the translator for not having used one of these words in preference to modifying [Greek text]; and it is certainly unpardonable of him to have Tartarized [Greek text] into . . . ANGUEL, when in Tartar there is a word equal to our messenger, which is the literal translation of [Greek text]. But I will have done with finding fault, and proceed to the more agreeable task of answering your letter.
My brother's address is as follows: Don Juan Borrow, Compagnia Anglo Mexicana, Guanajuato, Mexico.
