    CHAPTER THIRTEEN
LONE TAKES HIS STAND Lone Morgan, over at Elk Spring camp, was just sitting down to eat his midday meal when some one shouted outside. Lone stiffened in his chair, felt under his coat, and then got up with some deliberation and looked out of the window before he went to the door. All this was a matter of habit, bred of Lone's youth in the feud country, and had nothing whatever to do with his conscience. “Hello!” he called, standing in the doorway and grinning a welcome to Swan, who stood with one arm resting on the board gate. “She's on the tablecome on in.” “I don't know if you're home with the door shut like that,” Swan explained, coming up to the cabin. “I chased a coyote from Rock City to here, and by golly, he's going yet! I'll get him sometime, maybe. He's smart, but you can beat anything with thinking if you don't stop thinking. Always the other feller stops sometimes, and then you get him. You believe that?” “It most generally works out that way,” Lone admitted, getting another plate and cup from the cupboard, which was merely a box nailed with its bottom to the wall, and a flour sack tacked across the front for a curtain. “Even a coyote slips up now and then, I reckon.”

    CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO
“YACK, I LICK YOU GOOD IF YOU BARK” Swan cooked himself a hasty meal while he studied the various possibilities of the case and waited for further word from headquarters. He wanted to be sure that help had started and to be able to estimate within an hour or two the probable time of its arrival, before he left the wireless. Jack he fed and left on watch outside the cabin, so that he could without risk keep open the door to the dugout. His instrument was not a large one, and the dugout door was thick,as a precaution against discovery if he should be called when some visitor chanced to be in the cabin. Not often did a man ride that way, though occasionally some one stopped for a meal if he knew that the cabin was there and had ever tasted Swan's sour-dough biscuits. His aerial was cleverly camouflaged between the two pine trees, and he had no fear of discovery there; Jack was a faithful guardian and would give warning if any one approached the place. Swan could therefore give his whole attention to the business at hand. He was not yet supplied with evidence enough to warrant arresting Warfield and Hawkins, but he hoped to get it when the real crisis came. They could not have known of Al Woodruff's intentions toward Lorraine, else they would have kept themselves in the background and would not have risked the failure of their own plan.

B.M. Bower (1871-1940) , author of western fiction based in the American West wrote Chip of the Flying U As one of the first women to make a career of crafting western stories, Bower's granddaughter Kate Baird Anderson has worked to keep her memory alive. B. M. Bower (aka Bertha Muzzy Sinclair) was born in the state of Minnesota in 1871. The Bower family headed west to Montana in 1888 where Bertha became a teacher in Grand Falls. Her first husband's name was Clayton J. Bower, whom she married at the age of nineteen. Around 1900 Bower started to pen short stories, but her novel Chip of the Flying U was her first commercial success and is still said to most representative of her work. "Bleak" Cabin, near Big Sandy in Montana is where she wrote it. In Flying U the Old Man's daughter, who just became a doctor, is coming to stay for the summer, and causes a lot of uproar among Chip and the rough and tumble cowhands who work on the range, the `badlands' at the edge of the Rocky Mountains in `BearPaw' country. Illustrations for many of her novels were done by Bower's friend Charles (Charley) Russell. On 12 August, 1905, Bertha married her second husband Bertrand W. Sinclair. They travelled to a number of different states, including New Mexico, California and Idaho.

12. Borzoi Reader | Authors | Edgar Bowers
Poem by Edgar Bowers, with commentary by Donald Justice.
http://www.randomhouse.com/knopf/authors/bowers/poem.html
Collected Poems
"Living Together"
from COLLECTED POEMS

Of you I have no memory, keep no promise.
But, as I read, drink, wait, and watch the surf,
Faithful, almost forgotton, your demand
Becomes all others, and this loneliness
The need that is your presence. In the dark,
Beneath the lamp, attentive, like a sound
I listen for, you draw near closer, surer
Than speech, or sight, or love, or love returned. Commentary by Donald Justice This dark little poem is about trying to come to terms with some hidden aspect of the self not wholly accessible to reason. The style has the beautiful stark dignity of many of Bowers's poems, but there is another side to his work which should be mentioned as wella kind of cheerful stoicism that stemmed from his enormous zest for life. But then Bowers is not the first poet to live brightly and write darkly.
