Title: Typed Card Description: Scarce typed lettercard signed (purple type), one page, oblong 16mo, 210 Hamlet Gardens, Ravenscourt Park, London, 10 October 1937. To an unspecified recipient (identified on the verso in pencil in an unknown hand, "To Edwin Francis Edgett[?] of The Boston Transcript J.K.") expressing gratitude: "Will you please accept (and . . . kindly convey to your book reviewer, 'D.L.M.' also) my sincere thanks for the gratifying notice of 'The Return of Kai Lung' appearing in a recent issue of the 'Transcript.' Fine. Ernest Bramah [Smith] (1868-1942); reclusive British author, journalist and editor, creator of Max Carrados, the first blind fictional detective, and also of a fictional itinerant Chinese storyteller named Kai Lung. The Kai Lung novels were marked by a dry irony and absurd parody of the formally polite Chinese mode of expression, as perceived by Westerners of the day. The Kai Lung tales were quite popular with the intelligentsia of the times: writers from Dorothy L. Sayers to Thorne Smith mention them in their own works. The Wallet of Kai Lung
Ernest Bramah
The Richards Press 1900 A book review by Danny Yee Ernest Bramah's Kai Lung is a storyteller in an imagined China, telling tales of earnest examination candidates, corrupt mandarins, beautiful maidens, alchemical potions, grasping merchants, and assorted other stereotypes from the Western imagination of China. Bramah makes no attempt to depict any kind of historical reality, but uses the setting to allow his invention and fantasy free rein, to free himself from the confines of the mundane. The sentiment and some aspects of the setting are clearly late-Victorian, with juxtaposition of the two worlds sometimes used for comic effect. Much of the humour comes from Bramah's language, which is elaborate, ornate, and deliberately taken to excess, full of long sentences, circumlocutions, honorifics, euphemisms, et cetera (and no doubt for some people ad nauseam). Here are a couple of typical sentences: "the sentiments which this person expressed with irreproachable honourableness when the sun was high in the heavens and the probability of secretly leaving an undoubtedly well-appointed home was engagingly remote, seem to have an entirely different significance when recalled by night in a damp orchard, and on the eve of their fulfilment" and "Tiao had in the meantime accepted the wedding gifts of an objectionable and excessively round-bodied individual, who had amassed an inconceivable number of taels by inducing persons to take part in what at first sight appeared to be an ingenious but very easy competition connected with the order in which certain horses should arrive at a given and clearly defined spot."
