From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search Arthur Brisbane Arthur Brisbane (December 12, 1864 – December 25, 1936) was one of the best known American newspaper editors of the 20th century. Born in Buffalo, N. Y. , he was educated in the United States and Europe . In 1882, he began work as a newspaper reporter and editor in New York City , first at the Sun and later Joseph Pulitzer 's New York World . Hired away from Pulitzer by William Randolph Hearst , became editor of the New York Journal and Hearst's close friend. His syndicated editorial column had an estimated daily readership of over 20 million, according to Time magazine. He remained occupied in journalism and the newspaper field until his death in 1936, but also was a successful real estate investor. He is buried in the Batavia Cemetery at Batavia, New York At his death, Hearst said, "I know that Arthur Brisbane was the greatest journalist of his day," and Damon Runyon said "Journalism has lost its all-time No. 1 genius." (b. Dec. 12, 1864, Buffalo, N.Y., U.S.d. Dec. 25, 1936, New York City), U.S. newspaper editor and writer, known as the master of the big, blaring headline and of the atrocity story. He was the son of Albert Brisbane (1809-90), a social reformer whose ideas he early supported but later repudiated. Returning to the U.S. in 1883 from studies in Europe, he worked first on Charles A. Dana's New York Sun and then on Joseph Pulitzer's New York World . In 1897 William Randolph Hearst made him managing editor of The New York Journal , and, with his salary tied to circulation rises, Brisbane became the highest paid U.S. newspaper editor of his day. He played a large part in the Journal's promotion of the Spanish-American War. William Arthur, born 1731 in Saxe-Gotha, Lexington District, SC: died 1783 in SC. [Page 2 Dogan-Arthur Papers, SCL, Columbia SC.] He married about 1769, Elizabeth Fridig (Friday), born 14 August 1731 in Bern, Switzerland and died 26 March 1824 in Granby SC, daughter of Martin Fridig.
The earliest record of William Arthur is from the is on file at the SC Department of Archives and History, File#165 [Series# S108092, Reel #0003, Frame #00559]
A Letter of 1936 from Benjamin F.Arthur of Winchester, VA [papers of Theresa M Hicks, Columbia] , and letter Jesse Arthur (2) 1919 to cousin describing burial of Friday Arthur next to his father in Granby. [letter in Arthur Museum, Union, SC.] John Howell of the Cayce Museum reports that the graves are on the same property but all traces of the stones and markers have been removed. Gravesite now is dedicated land belonging to Guiaruad.
Dated November 08, 1784, a bond from William Arthur for 1000 guineas against right of dower of wife, Elizabeth has been documented.
