Description
"I have written about the joys of love. I have, in my secret heart, long dreamt of an intimate connection with a man; every Jane, I believe, deserves her Rochester." Though poor, plain, and unconnected, Charlotte Bronte possesses a deeply passionate side which she reveals only in her writings—creating Jane Eyre and other novels that stand among literature's most beloved works. Living a secluded life in the wilds of Yorkshire with her sisters Emily and Anne, their drug-addicted brother, and an eccentric father who is going blind, Charlotte Bronte dreams of a real love story as fiery as the ones she creates.

EMILY (1818-1848), and ANNE (1820-1849), English novelists, were three of the six children of Patrick Brontë, a clergyman of the Church of England, who for the last forty-one years of his life was perpetual incumbent of the parish of Haworth in the West Riding of Yorkshire. Patrick Brontë was born at Emsdale, Co. Down, Ireland, on the 17th of March 1777. His parents were of the peasant class, their original name of Brunty apparently having been changed by their son on his entry at St John's College, Cambridge, in 1802. In the intervening years he had been successively a weaver and schoolmaster in his native country. From Cambridge [v.04 p.0638] he became a curate, first at Wethersfield in Essex, in 1806, then for a few months at Wellington, Salop, in 1809. At the end of 1809 he accepted a curacy at Dewsbury, Yorkshire, following up this by one at Hartshead-cum-Clifton in the same county. At Hartshead Patrick Brontë married in 1812 Maria Branwell, a Cornishwoman, and there two children were born to him, Maria (1813-1825) and Elizabeth (1814-1825). Thence Patrick Brontë removed to Thornton, some 3 m. from Bradford, and here his wife gave birth to four children, Charlotte, Patrick Branwell (1817-1848), Emily Jane, and Anne, three of whom were to attain literary distinction. In April 1820, three months after the birth of Anne Brontë, her father accepted the living of Haworth, a village near Keighley in Yorkshire, which will always be associated with the romantic story of the Brontës. In September of the following year his wife died. Maria Brontë lives for us in her daughter's biography only as the writer of certain letters to her "dear saucy Pat," as she calls her lover, and as the author of a recently published manuscript, an essay entitled

Bronte, Charlotte
The lives of the Bronte sisters have become almost as romanticized as the stormy, Gothic novels they wrote - Charlotte, her sisters Emily and Anne, and their brother Branwell living in near isolation with a sternly religious father on a lonely, windswept moor, inhabiting a world peopled by their vivid imaginations and fueled by their literary genius. This Myth of the Lonely Geniuses began soon after Charlotte Bronte's death, and it has helped to popularize the sisters' writings to generations of readers. Even so, this myth does not accurately reflect many aspects of the Brontes' lives. As young adults, the sisters dedicated themselves to their writing and published a volume of poetry under the pseudonyms Currer, Ellis and Acton Bell in 1846. The first novels of Emily and Anne, Wuthering Heights and Agnes Grey, were accepted by publishers the following year. Charlotte's first attempt at publication, The Professor, was rejected. Her second novel, Jane Eyre, was published in late 1847. Although controversial, the novel met with commercial success. Despite the three authors' accomplishments, the following years were difficult ones for the family. All of its members suffered from intermittent illnesses, some severe. Branwell died in September 1848 from complications related to his persistent alcoholism and drug abuse. Emily and Anne both became seriously ill soon after. Emily died just two months after Branwell, and Anne followed in May 1849. Left to care for her aging father alone, Charlotte battled depression and continued her creative activities. Shirley was published in 1849.

Jane Eyre and other novels. Charlotte's first novel, The Professor (published posthumously, 1857), shows her sober reaction from the indulgences of her girlhood. Told in the first person by an English tutor in Brussels, it is based on Charlotte's experiences there, with a reversal of sexes and roles. The necessity of her genius, reinforced by reading her sister Emily's Wuthering Heights, modified this restrictive self-discipline; and, though there is plenty of satire and dry, direct phrasing in Jane Eyre, An Autobiography and is written in the first person; but, except in Jane Eyre's impressions of Lowood, the autobiography is not Charlotte's. Personal experience is fused with suggestions from widely different sources, and the Cinderella theme may well come from Samuel Richardson's Pamela. The action is carefully motivated, and apparently episodic sections, like the return to Gateshead Hall, are seen to be necessary to the full expression of Jane's character and the working out of the threefold moral theme of love, independence, and forgiveness. In her novel Shirley Charlotte avoided melodrama and coincidences and widened her scope. Setting aside Maria Edgworth and Sir Walter Scott as national novelists
