    Introduction
    "If I should die, think only this of me:
    That there's some corner of a foreign field
    That is for ever England. "
    Why Rupert Brooke? Why Skyros? Skyros lies in the Northern Aegean, the largest and most isolated of the Northern Sporades. The island is sparsely populated, and its small community - who mostly live in its capital - are closely-knit. Despite the variety and beauty of its terrain, it lies well off most tourist itineraries. The island was first mentioned by Homer, and Achilles hid here until he was called up to fight in the Siege of Troy. In subsequent centuries, it was occupied first by the Athenians, and later by the Romans, Venetians, Turks and Russians, as well as spending a century as part of the Byzantine Empire. In the First World War, Tris Boukes Bay (on the south-west of the island) was used as anchorage for hospital ships treating the wounded from Gallipoli. It was on one of these that the English poet Rupert Brooke died in April 1915. The most visible memorial to this is in Skyros Town itself. High up above the sea, in Brooke Square, stands the "statue of an ideal poet", pictured here. Funding for this came from a Belgian philanthropist, and an International Committee organised its unveilling in 1931. It was intended to be an allegorical figure rather than a true likeness to Brooke. The original model is believed to have been a young man selected in Athens by its sculptor, Michael Tombros.

    SUMMARY Yet Boston is alive. It sits, in comfortable middle-age, on the ruins of its glory. But it is not buried beneath them. It used to lead America in Literature, Thought, Art, everything. The years have passed. It is remarkable how nearly now Boston is to New York what Munich is to Berlin. Boston and Munich were the leaders forty years ago. They can't quite make out that they aren't now. It is too incredible that Art should leave her goose-feather bed and away to the wraggle-taggle business-men. SUMMARY Yet Boston is alive. Rupert (Chawner) Brooke (1887-1915) Promising English poet who died young in World War I. Brooke's best-known work is the sonnet sequence 1914 AND OTHER POEMS (1915), containing the famous 'The Soldier.' Poets have always glorified war, and Brooke did his best to continue the tradition, and sacrifice himself in this effort. His death made him the hero of the first phase of the war and a canonized symbol of all the gifted young people destroyed by the conflict. However, Brooke's poetry with its patriotic mood and naive enthusiasm went out of fashion as the realities of warfare were fully understood. "If I should die, think only this of me:
    That there's some corner of a foreign field
    That is forever England."

    (from 'The Soldier' In 1911 appeared Brooke first collection of verse, POEMS, and his work was featured in the periodical Georgian Poetry , edited by his friend, Sir Edward Marsh. Over the next twenty years, the book sold almost 100 000 copies. In 1911 Brooke was secretly engaged to Noel Olivier, five years his junior. The affair was for all participants frustrating and subsequently Brooke had an affair with the actress Cathleen Nesbitt. Overworked and emotionally empty, Brooke suffered a nervous breakdown. In the spring of 1912, Brooke and Ka Cox went to Germany, where he wrote 'The Old Vicarage, Grantchester', which is among his most admired poems.

      I. PEACE
      Now, God be thanked Who has matched us with His hour,
      And caught our youth, and wakened us from sleeping,
      With hand made sure, clear eye, and sharpened power,
      To turn, as swimmers into cleanness leaping,
        Glad from a world grown old and cold and weary,
        Leave the sick hearts that honour could not move,
        And half-men, and their dirty songs and dreary,
        And all the little emptiness of love!
      Oh! we, who have known shame, we have found release there,
      Where there's no ill, no grief, but sleep has mending,
      Naught broken save this body, lost but breath;
      Nothing to shake the laughing heart's long peace there
      But only agony, and that has ending;
      And the worst friend and enemy is but Death.
      II. SAFETY
      Dear! of all happy in the hour, most blest
      He who has found our hid security,
      Assured in the dark tides of the world that rest,
      And heard our word, "Who is so safe as we?"
        We have found safety with all things undying,
        The winds, and morning, tears of men and mirth,
        The deep night, and birds singing, and clouds flying
