Book Description
Ward, Artemus [Browne, Charles Farrar] FUN ON THE ROAD, A LITERARY RECORD OF AMERICAN HUMOR. New York: M. J. Ivers [ca. 1880] First edition. Original color pictorial wrappers . Minor snag at one corner, else a nice copy of a fragile piece. This anonymously edited anthology contains the usual selection of low-brow jests, jokes, racist stories, etc. The first selection is Artemus Ward's `Reginald Gloverson' but this is unrecoreded by BAL who does record another booklet in this series, FUN LET LOOSE (BAL 1556). Based upon the ads on the back wrapper we would suppose this booklet precedes or is contemporary with the other booklet. Other "contributors" included Thomas Hood and Thackeray. Charles Farrar Browne
Charles Farrar Browne April 23 March 6 ) was a United States humorous writer, best known under his nom de plume of Artemus Ward . Browne was born in Waterford, Maine . He began life as a compositor and occasional contributor to the daily and weekly journals. In 1858 he published in the Cleveland Plaindealer the first of the "Artemus Ward" series, which in a collected form achieved great popularity in both America and England . In 1860 he became editor of Vanity Fair , a humorous New York weekly, which proved a failure. About the same time he began to appear as a lecturer, and by his droll and eccentric humour attracted large audiences. "Artemus Ward" was the favorite author of US President Abraham Lincoln . Before presenting " The Emancipation Proclamation " to his Cabinet, Lincoln read to them the latest episode, "Outrage in Utiky", also known as High-Handed Outrage at Utica . In 1866 Ward visited England, where he became exceedingly popular both as a lecturer and as a contributor to Punch magazine . In the spring of the following year his health gave way and he died of tuberculosis at Southampton on March 6

Charles Farrar Browne
From the Catholic Encyclopedia (ARTEMUS WARD). Artemus Ward was a consummate humorist and represented a type distinctively American. His fun was a fountain that always bubbled, ministering naturally to the happiness of himself and others. In leading up to the joke whatever art was employed was carefully concealed, and the joke itself when it came was always a surprise but never an awkward or unwholesome one. The depth and strength of his character are revealed as well in the interest excited by his lectures and sayings as in the friendships he formed and retained to the end.
