Orestes Augustus Brownson
Philosopher , essayist, reviewer, b. at Stockbridge, Vermont, U.S.A. , 16 September, 1803; d. at Detroit, Michigan , 17 April, 1876. His childhood was passed on a small farm with plain country people, honest and upright Congregationalists , who treated him with kindness and affection, taught him the Lord's Prayer , the Apostles' Creed , and the Assembly's Catechism; to be honest and industrious, truthful in all circumstances, and never to let the sun go down on his wrath . With no young companions, his fondness for reading grew rapidly, though he had access to few books, and those of a grave or religious nature. At the age of nineteen he had a fair knowledge of grammar and arithmetic and could translate Virgil's poetry. In October, 1822, he joined the Presbyterian Church , dreamed of becoming a missionary, but very soon felt repelled by Presbyterian discipline, and still more by the doctrines of unconditional election and reprobation, and that God foreordains the wicked to sin necessarily, that He may damn them

Biography
Orestes Augustus Brownson, philosopher, minister, essayist, and reviewer, was born in Stockbridge, Vermont in 1803. Two years later his father Sylvester Augustus Brownson died, leaving his family in a financially difficult situation. Relief Metcalf, Orestes' mother, sent him to Royalton, Vermont. There he lived in a Puritan/Calvinistic atmosphere with a couple of elderly farmers until he was fourteen. Brownson became an avid reader despite the fact that during his Royalton years he only read a few books, all of them religious. He attended different churches there and developed his critical skills by comparing their sermons. At fourteen he returned to his family; his mother moved to New York State. He received a modest education then and worked in a printer's office. The range of his readings broadened significantly; he read Aristotle, St.Augustine, Abbate Gioberti, Pierre Leroux, Plato Suarez, St.Thomas, and many others. Brownson began to teach when he was twenty, first in Stillwater, N.Y., then in Detroit. Three years later he became a Universalist preacher, then the editor of the Universalistic theological journal Gospel Advocate But the teaching and preaching did not occupy his entire time. In his twenties O.Brownson was an active democrat. He supported the Workingman's Party that advocated the Owen-Wright theory of education, which envisioned two year olds starting their state-controlled and state-provided education. Brownson, then editor of "Genesee Republican" and " Herald of Reform," supported the Owen-Wright theory, but he also expressed his concern about the possible outcome of such education. He predicted a fall of parental authority and children being shaped into the " well-trained animals" ("The Convert,"

    Brook Farm
Brook Farm, Ripley , a Unitarian minister, the farm was initially financed by a joint-stock company with 24 shares of stock at $500 per share. Each member was to take part in the manual labor in an attempt to make the group self-sufficient. Intellectual life was stimulating, with such members as Nathaniel Hawthorne , John S. Dwight, Charles A. Dana , and Isaac Hecker , and such visitors as Ralph Waldo Emerson , W. E. Channing , Margaret Fuller , Horace Greeley , and Orestes Brownson . Brook Farm was mainly an outgrowth of Unitarianism , although most of the members had left that church and were advocates of the literary and philosophical movement known as transcendentalism . Economically, the community's excellent school was the most successful part of the venture (anticipating John Dewey's progressive-education ideas of learning from experience); agriculture showed little profit because of the sandy soil and the inexperience of the farmers. The popularity of the doctrines of Charles Fourier led, especially through the efforts of Albert Brisbane, to Brook Farm's conversion to a phalanx in 1844. The group, however, did not long survive the financial disaster of the burning (1846) of the uncompleted central building. The
