Anonymous: Should probably be number 1. It is the seat of our government, has been burned and gutten by invasion, and the dome was completed during the Civil War. February 9, 2007 1:02 AM Posted on February 9, 2007 01:02 Vernon Reed, FAIA: Meigs should not be credited with having any design responsibility for the Capitol expansion. He was a Corp of Engineers project manager and persistently interfered with Thomas Walter, the architect for that work. Meigs could be credited with engaging artists and sculptors to adorn the building. But he did that as an administrator, not a designer. Meigs tried to claim credit for designing the dome by saying that Walter was only drawing his ideas. He even went so far as placing his name on Walter's drawings. His claim was a phony one for those who knew Walter knew that he was probably the most competent architect of his day, even in the engineering disciplines, as well as the architectural. Finally, to get Meigs out of Walter's way, he was transfered to an island off Florida.

Thomas Bulfinch (1796-1867) , American banker and author wrote Bulfinchs Mythology comprised of three volumes: The Age of Fable (1855) in which the myths of Greek and Roman Gods and Heroes Hercules, Orpheus, Pan, Zeus and many others from Ovid and Virgil are retold; The Age of Chivalry (1858) wherein Bulfinch collects the great Arthurian legends in Englands history surrounding King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table, Richard the Lion Hearted, Robin Hood and many others; and in Legends of Charlemagne (1863) one can read about Charlemagne, his knights the Paladins, Orlando, the Orcs, Ogier the Dane and many others in their exploits in France, Germany, Africa and beyond. Adding his own commentary, Bulfinch aimed to impart wisdom by retelling these ancient classical and mythological legends of Celtic, Greek, Oriental, Roman, and Scandinavian origin and their relation to the literary world

"Friends, our nets and our weapons are wet with the blood of our victims; we have had sport enough for one day, and to-morrow we can renew our labours. Now, while Phoebus parches the earth, let us put by our implements and indulge ourselves with rest."
There was a valley thick enclosed with cypresses and pines, sacred to the huntress queen, Diana. In the extremity of the valley was a cave, not adorned with art, but nature had counterfeited art in its construction, for she had turned the arch of its roof with stones, as delicately fitted as if by the hand of man. A fountain burst out from one side, whose open basin was bounded by a grassy rim. Here the goddess of the woods used to come when weary with hunting and lave her virgin limbs in the sparkling water.

The following account was published in Biographical Dictionary of North American Classicists , edited by Ward W. Briggs, Jr. Prepared under the Auspices of the American Philological Association (Greenwood Press, 1994). Reproduced here by permission of the American Philological Association. BULFINCH, Thomas Born Education : A.B. Harvard, 1814. Prof. Exp .: Teacher, Boston Latin School; assistant in store; attempted various business ventures without success; clerk of Merchant's Bank, Boston, from 1837 until his death; recording secretary, Boston Soc. Nat. Hist., 1842-8. Died : 27 May 1867, Boston, MA. Bulfinch, in his enduringly popular book The Age of Fable , made available to a mass audience a branch of learning, classical mythology, which had previously been reserved for a privileged few. Though formally employed as a teacher for only a brief time in his youth, he drew upon a powerful pedagogical imagination to attract readers to the myths by interweaving with his narratives myth-related quotations from familiar poetry. A public-spirited man imbued with democratic educational ideals, in late middle age and in the limited leisure time his regular job allowed, he wrote eight books, six of them popularizations of important works of Western literature. The Age of Fable , to which Edward Everett Hale gave the alternate title Bulfinch's Mythology , is the most famous.

    Autograph Letter Signed, 8vo, n.p., March 14, 1866.
This note was written by Bulfinch a year before his death, to a friend, Colonel F. Haven, Jr. He writes, "Dear Colonel, I am sorry to say that I forgot entirely an engagement which will call me away from home tomorrow evening (Thursday) and, if you please, I will fix Saturday evening next, to expect you, if perfectly convenient to yourself. Yours with great regard", and he signs, "T. Bulfinch". It is written in a very delicate and neat hand, for someone of his age. A fine letter from the author.
