John Bunyan (November 28, 1628 – August 31, 1688), a Christian writer and preacher, was born at Harrowden (one mile south-east of Bedford, Bedfordshire), in the Parish of Elstow, England. As a preacher, John had the reputation of being able to inspire and stir the hearts of his listeners. He is the author of Pilgrim's Progress, arguably the most famous published Christian allegory. In addition to Pilgrim's Progress, Bunyan wrote nearly sixty titles, many of them expanded sermons. Bunyan faced legal challenges to fulfilling his calling but did not compromise to authorities. He preferred to face and endure years of imprisonment at great sacrifice to himself and family, rather than resign himself to giving up preaching. He is identified with the Puritan tradition. Those not episcopally ordained as Church of England clergy were not legally recognized as ministers and so were unlicensed to preach. They faced possible imprisonment. Bunyon spent 12 years in prison. Bunyon saw few results in his own life-time in terms of large numbers of converts. However, he was convinced that faithfulness in God means that one leave results in God's hands, to produce them as God sees fit. John Bunyan, the world-renowned author of the Pilgrim's Progress, was never a drunkard or a libertine, but was given to profanity, Sabbath-desecration and "heart-atheism." Amidst his wicked career, he had many gloomy forebodings of the wrath to come; and his nights were often scared with visions, which the boisterous diversions of his waking day could not always dispel. He would occasionally dream that the last day had come, and that the quaking earth was opening its mouth to let him down to hell. As he grew older he grew harder. He married a pious wife, who had two books, The Plain Man's Pathway to Heaven, and the Practice of Piety. He read these books, which had some effect upon him. One day he heard a sermon on Sabbath-breaking, and it haunted his conscience throughout the day. When in the midst of the excitement of that afternoon's diversions, a voice seemed to dart from heaven into his soul, "Wilt thou leave thy sins, and go to heaven, or have thy sins and go to hell?" His arm, which was raised to strike a ball in play, was suddenly arrested, and looking up to heaven, he said, it appeared as if the Lord Jesus was looking down [21] upon him in remonstrance and deep displeasure. He still continued on in sin, however, and ran into the delusion that repentance was now too late.

Nationality: English Categories: Authors Clergymen Ministers Writers 1628 - John Bunyan was born in November, at Elstow, a little village about a mile south of Bedford in Bedfordshire [England]. 1647-1648 - After leaving the army, Bunyan married, but no record of his marriage has yet been found, and both the Christian and the family name of his wife are unknown. It seems likely that she was not a native of Elstow. - He recovered the art of reading, which he apparently had forgotten. He seems also to have resumed his tinker's trade. 1652 - The four years following his marriage were the period of the intense spiritual struggles which Bunyan records in the autobiography, written many years later, entitled Grace Abounding. It was this experience which made it possible for him to write The Pilgrim's Progress. 1653 - Bunyan joined this body, although still living in Elstow, and two years later, having removed to Bedford, he was chosen a deacon in the church. He continued to employ himself as a tinker, but this new interest in the Bedford church must have come to be of paramount importance. 1656 - Appeared Some Gospel Truths Opened, in which, according to Offor, the editor of the most recent edition of Bunyan's complete works, Bunyan "attacked the follies of the time, exposed and condemned heresies without mercy.

Originally composed in the 17th century, this spiritual allegory has entertained and delighted innumerous readers for over 300 years. Part I tells of "Christian" and his journey to "Celestial City;" Part II tells of the journey of Christian's wife Christiana and their children to Celestial City. The two parts work together as a unified whole, which describes and depicts the believer's life and struggles. Indeed, given the easy style of the book, readers of all ages can understand the spiritual significance of the depictions in the story. However, Pilgrim's Progress does not simply instruct readers with spiritual allegories; it entertains them as well, through Bunyan's creative story telling. Enjoyable and spiritually instructive, Pilgrim's Progress is highly recommended.

Illustrations accompanying an old copy of by the celebrated minister John Bunyan of Bedfordshire. The Pilgrim's Progress is, well, sui generis . Tradition holds that John Bunyan wrote it in Bedford Gaol, while imprisoned for the crime of holding a religious service not in conformity with the Church of England. Bunyan spent twelve years in Bedford Gaol for that offense, which helps to explain why nonconformists liked to emigrate to America when they could. Anyone familiar with this extraordinary work will agree with Samuel Johnson's assessment of John Bunyan, made nearly 100 years after the first publication of Pilgim's Progress and reported by James Boswell in his Life of Samuel Johnson, LL.D. Johnson praised John Bunyan highly. "His Pilgrim's Progress has great merit, both for invention, imagination, and the conduct of the story; and it has had the best evidence of its merit, the general and continued approbation of mankind. Few books, I believe, have had a more extensive sale. It is remarkable, that it begins very much like the poem of Dante; yet there was no translation of Dante when Bunyan wrote. There is reason to think that he had read Spenser."
