Switzerland Died Nationality Swiss Occupation Historian Carl Jacob Christoph Burckhardt (May 25, 1818, Basel Switzerland – August 8, 1897, Basel) was a historian of art and culture , and an influential figure in the historiography of each field. He is known as one of the major progenitors of cultural history , albeit in a form very different from how cultural history is conceived and studied in academia today. citation needed Siegfried Giedion described Burckhardt's achievement in the following terms: "The great discoverer of the age of the Renaissance , he first showed how a period should be treated in its entirety, with regard not only for its painting, sculpture and architecture, but for the social institutions of its daily life as well." Burckhardt's best known work is The Civilization of the Renaissance in Italy

Jacob Burckhardt: History as Education and Culture
David Melson
In The Civilization of the Renaissance in Italy and The Greeks and Greek Civilization Chronologically, the historical works of Jacob Burckhardt lie near the end of the nineteenth century. He lived and worked during final decades of a century that saw European states transformed violently from agricultural states to industrial states employing technology unheard of before the 1800s. Coincident with the massive political and technological changes, European society changed dramatically. The industrial working class became, for the first time, a significant portion of the population in Western Europe. Furthermore, the French revolution of 1789 set the tone for the struggles between orthodoxy and liberal thought that would dominate European society for the next one hundred years. Burckhardt recognized the dramatic changes that occurred in European society during his lifetime. He responded to them, not by advocating direct political change like many of his contemporaries, but by presenting the traditions of European culture as the highest achievements of mankind. He hoped that by educating a wide segment of the public, he could demonstrate the connections between the Europe of his day and its predecessors. Moreover, through giving the public a sense of the continuity of human culture, he hoped to warn of the dangers inherent in abandoning traditional culture for the sake of revolution.

Subject: Jacob Burckhardt, Swiss Philosopher of History - 100th Anniversary of His Death 1897
By Bertil Haggman, 28 December 1997
(1943) by Jacob Burkhardt
A Few Reflections and Notes
Weltgeschichtliche Betrachtungen were translated and published in English in the 1940s. The original version in German was published post-humously. The establishment of a state or a religion is often the result of the displacement of a previous power that has become corrupt or decadent. It is often based on ideals to set up a new order. But the new order has to maintain itself in power. Therefore power in the end has a corrosive action on humanity. The role of the state is therefore to check factions, who want to gain power by the means of force, and to maintain a sense of security and continuity. Change is the essence of history. Thus culture is the most important element of a civilization: In a chapter on crisis of history JB discusses the accelerated movement of the process of history. It is when developments that normally take centuries pass by in a few months or even a few days. Another important section in , that on fortune and misfortune in history, deals with interpretation of history. Our study of the past must be free of egoism, ulterior motives and vain assumptions of superiority. Moral progress is relevant to the life of the individual and not to whole epochs. If, even in bygone times, men gave their lives for each other, we have not progressed since.
