Publication date Media type Print ( Hardback Paperback Preceded by Llana of Gathol John Carter of Mars , the eleventh and final book in the famous Barsoom series by Edgar Rice Burroughs , is not actually a novel but rather a collection of two John Carter of Mars stories. The first, "John Carter and the Giant of Mars," is a juvenile story penned by Burrough's son John "Jack" Coleman Burroughs, and claimed to have been revised by Burroughs. It was written for a Whitman Big Little Book , illustrated by Jack Burroughs that was published in and then republished in Amazing Stories the next year. The second story, "Skeleton Men of Jupiter," was first published in Amazing Stories in . Intended as the first in a series of novelettes to be later collected in book form, in the fashion of Llana of Gathol , it ends with the plot unresolved, and the intended sequels were never written. Several other writers have written pastiche endings for the story.

    Burroughs, John
    American, 1837–1921
During his lifetime the American nature writer John Burroughs
The accomplishment of his writing, and its great contribution to American nature writing, is in the sunlit work itself, and in the wooded, bird-attended path it helped create for other writers. (Burroughs, sometimes known as “JohnO’Birds,” was more likely to lavish his sentences and paragraphs on a bird’s song or its nest than on a “scenic view.”)
Burroughs’ work also reveals strong ties to the American Romanticism of Walt Whitman, the close friend of his years in Washington, D.C.Burroughs wrote his first book about Whitman’s work, and it was Whitman who helped him decide on the title of his first book of essays, Wake-Robin (1871). It is likely that the many hours and days spent with Whitman helped to nourish the generous, openhearted, and often lyrical spirit of Burroughs’ own writing style.
The essay might have ended here, but instead it goes on to describe the migrations of other bird species, and to speculate about their lives, closing many pages later with the description of purple finches stealing cherry blossoms from his orchard. After his alarm that they might ruin his crop, he discovered that “they had only done a little of the much- needed thinning. Out of a cluster of six or eight blossoms they seldom took more than two or three, as if they knew precisely what they were about, and were intent on rendering me a service.” He does not spell out the contrast between the finches’ considerate thinning of his cherry blossoms and the human “greed and cupidity” that drove the passenger pigeon to extinction, but leaves it to the reader to make the connection.

    Burroughs, John
    (b. April 3, 1837, near Roxbury, N.Y., U.S.d. March 29, 1921, en route from California to New York), American essayist and naturalist who lived and wrote after the manner of Henry David Thoreau, studying and celebrating nature. In his earlier years Burroughs worked as a teacher and a farmer and for nine years as a clerk in the Treasury Department, Washington, D.C. In 1867 he paid tribute to his friend Walt Whitman in the book Notes on Walt Whitman as Poet and Person. In 1871 Wake-Robin, the first of his books on birds, flowers, and rural scenes, was published. Two years later he moved to a farm in the Hudson River valley and, from various retreats, wrote for half a century on nature subjects. His later writings showed a more philosophic mood and a greater disposition toward literary or meditative allusion than did his earlier work. His chief books, in addition to Wake-Robin, are Birds and Poets Locusts and Wild Honey Signs and Seasons (1886), and
