Abraham Cahan
Abraham Cahan has been described as the single most influential personality in the cultural life of well over two million Jewish immigrants and their families during his lifetime. As a journalist and writer, his unique ability to mediate among the various sensibilities and languages of the Lower East Side in New York City placed him at the center of American Jewish culture and Jewish writing. His major fictional works, Yekl (1896) and The Rise of David Levinsky (1917), are widely recognized as classic accounts of the immigrant experience of Americanization.
Born in Podberezy, Russia, Cahan was educated at traditional Jewish cheders and also studied at the Vilna Teachers Institute, a Russian government school for Jewish teachers. After graduating in 1881, he began teaching and at the same time became deeply involved in radical, underground anti-czarist activities. Forced to flee, he joined a group of immigrants bound for America and arrived in Philadelphia on June 5, 1882. The next day he reached New York, where his religious training proved useless and secular success beckoned. In 1890 he became editor of the weekly Arbeiter Zeitung

Abraham Cahan 1860-1951
Biography Project by Randy Hudgins, Fall 2003
In a career that spanned six decades as an author, journalist, and editor, Abraham Cahan served as a beacon of guidance for the rapidly expanding Jewish immigrant community. Cahan was born in Lithuania in 1860. While attending college, Cahan developed into an ardent Socialist. Following his graduation in 1881, he took a position as a teacher. His Socialist views would bring him under government scrutiny following a popular uprising in 1882. In order to escape persecution for his political beliefs, he immigrated to the United States.
After arriving in the United States, Cahan worked several factory jobs. His experiences as a factory worker, combined with his Socialist political views were to have a profound effect on his writing style. During the mid-1880's he became active in the Jewish community by helping to organize labor unions and making speeches on pertinent issues. He chose to deliver these speeches in the vernacular Yiddish, so his message would be more readily understood by audiences he was trying to reach. He also became a contributor to several Jewish newspapers. It was through his contributions to these newspapers that his work began to be recognized and published. His first major work was Yekl: A Tale of the New York Ghetto , published in 1896. This was followed by

    CHAPTER I
SOMETIMES, when I think of my past in a superficial, casual way, the metamorphosis I have gone through strikes me as nothing short of a miracle. I was born and reared in the lowest depths of poverty and I arrived in Americain 1885with four cents in my pocket. I am now worth more than two million dollars and recognized as one of the two or three leading men in the cloak-and-suit trade in the United States. And yet when I take a look at my inner identity it impresses me as being precisely the same as it was thirty or forty years ago. My present station, power, the amount of worldly happiness at my command, and the rest of it, seem to be devoid of significance. When I was young I used to think that middle-aged people recalled their youth as something seen through a haze. I know better now. Life is much shorter than I imagined it to be. The last years that I spent in my native land and my first years in America come back to me with the distinctness of yesterday. Indeed, I have a better recollection of many a trifle of my childhood days than I have of some important things that occurred to me recently. I have a good memory for faces, but I am apt to recognize people I have not seen for a quarter of a century more readily than I do some I used to know only a few years ago.

He emigrated to New York City in 1882, entered journalism, and helped found the Jewish Daily Forward (1897); as editor in chief after 1902, he made it the most influential Jewish daily in America. He was a founder of the Social Democratic party in 1897 and after 1902 supported the Socialist party. Cahan's writings in English, particularly Yekl: a Tale of the New York Ghetto The Imported Bridegroom and Other Stories (1898), and The Rise of David Levinsky (1917), are recognized for their historical portrayals of the immigrant experience. Cahan, Abraham
(b . July 7, 1860, Vilna, Russian Empire [now Vilnius, Lithuania]d. Aug. 31, 1951, New York, N.Y., U.S.), journalist, reformer, and novelist who for more than 40 years served as editor of the New York Yiddish-language daily newspaper the Jewish Daily Forward (Yiddish title Forverts ), which helped newly arrived Jewish immigrants adapt to American culture. Himself an immigrant, Cahan arrived in the United States in 1882. While working in a cigar factory, he learned enough English in six years to lecture and write. In 1897 he joined the staff of the Jewish Daily Forward. He prompted the paper to become more outspoken politically, causing the publication to be regarded as one of the most important institutions upholding the interests of immigrants at the turn of the century. Intensely political and bitterly anticommunist, Cahan was also active in organizing trade unions, particularly in the garment industries. Cahan's fiction is largely unremarkable except for The Rise of David Levinsky (1917), one of the first books about the Jewish immigrant's experience. Set on the Lower East Side of New York City, the novel traces the fortunes of a penniless immigrant who eventually becomes a wealthy manufacturer. Critics agree that the value of the book is historical rather than literary; its strength lies chiefly in its vivid re-creation of life in a section of New York City. Cahan was more influential as a mentor than as an author, encouraging young writers such as Sholem Asch. As editor of
