5. Who Was Who (Hall Caine)
Biography, genealogy, bibliography, and photos related to the Manx writer.
Thomas Henry Hall Caine, 1853-1931
Born at Runcorn, Cheshire, 14 May 1853, to a Manx father and a Cumberland mother and brought up in Liverpool; however spent considerable time in his youth with uncle's family in Ballaugh and Manx grandmother. Also spent some time helping a schoolmaster uncle at Kirk Maughold. Consumate self publicist and not always entirely truthful - not for nothing did Vivien Allen choose the punning subtitle "Portrait of a Victorian Romancer" for her biography. Hall Caine's own biography "My Story" contains few hard facts and where his early connection with the Island is concerned is somewhat misleading. At times he postured as more Manx than the Manx who, though they elected him MHK for many years, were deeply suspicious of him and never warmed to him. Caine would appear to have recognised this for in his note to " Recollections of Rossetti " he writes of this Manx Schoolmastering period 'I had few books of poetry and I had none of fiction, for what we afterwards called the Nonconformist conscience had already penetrated our bleak solitude and our seniors had no place for the authors who (as an unforgiving Manxman in later years said of myself) "earned their living by telling lies".' Samuel Norris, another comeover, who had personal memories of Hall Caine barely conceals his dislike in his joint biography of Caine and the undoubtedly greater T.E.Brown

The Caine mss., 1891-1931, consist of papers of Sir Hall Caine, 1853-1931, novelist and playwright. Letters are addressed in 1891 and 1892 from Caine to Miss A[delaide S.] Lauprecht of the Midland Institute, Birmingham, [England], who had written to him about translating The Scapegoat into German. Other letters are addressed to George Bowler in 1918 concerning arrangements for his will; two replies from Bowler, chartered accountant of Liverpool, examine these arrangements. A letter from H. S. B. Goldsmith to Caine in 1914 was readdressed to George Bowler and bears the dark blue wax seal of HC. A financial ledger of loose leaves in a dark brown binder with "Sir Hall Caine K.B.E." on the edge covers the years 1922, Apr. 5, to 1931, Aug. 31. Laid in the ledger is a separate leaf for the Isle of Man Bank, Ltd., 1931, Sept. 2-Oct. 16. Information in the ledger concerns deeds of conveyance which date from 1874. Literary Earnings and Royalties are summarized under the heading of Sundries in the ledger. Some ephemeral material is included. Collection size: 10 items Additions to the Caine mss., 1882-1926, consist primarily of letters from novelist and playwright, Hall Caine, 1853- 1931, to various friends, writers, and business associates. Letters in 1882, 1888, and 1890 are addressed to William Cosmo Monkhouse, poet and critic, with whom Caine corresponded on matters of literature and art. Monkhouse wrote a review of Caine's The Deemster in 1888.

Thomas Henry Hall Caine
From LoveToKnow 1911
THOMAS HENRY HALL CAINE (1853-), British novelist and dramatist, was born of mixed Manx and Cumberland parentage at Runcorn Cheshire , on the 14th of May 1853. He was educated with a view to becoming an architect, but turned to journalism, becoming a leader-writer on the Liverpool Mercury. He came up to London at the suggestion of D. G. Rossetti, with whom he had had some correspondence, and lived with the poet for some time before his death. He published a volume of Recollections of Rossetti (1882), and also some critical work; but in 1885 he began an extremely successful career as a novelist of a melodramatic type with The Shadow of a Crime followed by The Son of Hagar The Deemster The Bondman The Scapegoat The Manxman The Christian The Eternal City (1901), and The Prodigal Son (1904). His writings on Manx subjects were acknowledged by his election in 1901 to represent Ramsey in the House of Keys. The Deemster, The Manxman and The Christian had already been produced in dramatic form, when The Eternal City was staged with magnificent accessories by Mr Beerbohm Tree in 1902, and in 1905
