Calamity Jane's is a restaurant and meetinghouse in the historic Georgetown neighborhood of South Seattle, where we celebrate the spirit of our namesake. The real Calamity Jane, (1852- 1903,) was a strong woman who carried a gun when few women dared and never let down her fellow pioneers. She never killed anyone that didn't need killin'. Calamity Jane helped settle the Wild West and today we continue her tradition of rowdy women and straight shooting. Our menu is lively and comforting, with something to please a variety of palettes and wide range of tastes. All items are hand crafted here from savory dressings to nostalgic meatballs and delectable desserts, all using the highest quality ingredients, often organic produce and Angus Beef. We also offer a great cocktail list, select wines, tap and bottled beers, premium coffee and real juices. Creative types, professionals and neighborhood icons all pony up to our grand late 1800s oak bar, crowned by a genuine Winchester Lever Action 30/30 Model 1894, like the one Calamity Jane carried. Come join us, we'll find a seat for you!

The Calamity Jane Horse Cache consists of 2139 acres of rolling hills, ponderosa pine trees, and majestic rim rock cliffs. A portion of the ranch (254 acres) was once owned by the notorious Martha Jane Canary, alias Calamity Jane (1852-1903). Calamity found this unusual plateau west of Billings, Montana to be a perfect, temporary, holding place for horses (a cache). The plateau, which bears her name today, rises 100 meters from the valley floor and is completely skirted by rim rock cliffs. This naturally fenced area provided Calamity an easy place to cache horses. She found or created a secret passage to the top and would bring horses down to water from Canyon Creek which flows around the north base of the Horse Cache. The Battle of Canyon Creek between the Nez Pierce Indians and the U.S. Cavalry took place at the foot of the Calamity Jane Horse Cache plateau.

Life And Adventures Of Calamity Jane
by
Marthy Burk, aka Calamity Jane (1852-1903)
Bibliographic Notes: First published in c1900.
My maiden name was Marthy Cannary. I was born in Princeton, Missourri, May 1 st , 1852. Father and mother were natives of Ohio. I had two brothers and three sisters, I being the oldest of the children. As a child I always had a fondness for adventure and out-door exercise and especial fondness for horses which I began to ride at an early age and continued to do so until I became an expert rider being able to ride the most vicious and stubborn of horses, in fact the greater portion of my life in early times was spent in this manner. Mother died at Black Foot, Montana, 1866, where we buried her. I left Montana in Spring of 1866, for Utah, arriving at Salt Lake city during the summer. Remained in Utah until 1867, where my father died, then went to Fort Bridger, Wyoming Territory, where we arrived May 1, 1868, then went to Piedmont, Wyoming, with UP Railway. Joined General Custer as a scout at Fort Russell, Wyoming, in 1870, and started for Arizona for the Indian Campaign. Up to this time I had always worn the costume of my sex. When I joined Custer I donned the uniform of a soldier. It was a bit awkward at first but I soon got to be perfectly at home in men's clothes. Was in Arizona up to the winter of 1871 and during that time I had a great many adventures with the Indians, for as a scout I had a great many dangerous missions to perform and while I was in many close places always succeeded in getting away safely for by this time I was considered the most reckless and daring rider and one of the best shots in the western country.
