Dora was born in Liverpool, England. Sometime around 1869, she emigrated to the United States with her parents Joseph John (Nov. 14, 1842 - March 26, 1911) and Isabella Neal Cummings Bolshaw (Nov. 12, 1844 - April 12, 1911). The family settled first at Bloomfield, New Jersey , and then in 1876 or 1877 they moved to Lincoln, Nebraska . An extremely good looking woman in her youth, Dora became involved in prostitution around the age of 13 or 14. She then became a dance hall girl, calling herself Amy Helen Dorothy Bolshaw. By the time that the gold rush hit Deadwood when she was 15, Dora promoted herself to Madam and began operating a brothel. Dora coined the term "cathouse."

Gone West: A Very Strange Land Barbed Wire, twisted steel wire with short barbs or sharp points of wire twisted around it at regular intervals. Because it provided cheap, effective fencing, it revolutionized the cattle industry in the American West. In warfare, barbed wire entanglements are used to defend lines of battle. Joseph F. Glidden of DeKalb, Illinois, patented barbed wire in 1874. He got the idea from Henry N. Rose, also of DeKalb, who developed a fence made of strips of wood studded with barbs. Others had similar ideas, but Glidden's patents were upheld by the courts. Barbed Wire and Cattle Cattlemen doubted that wire fencing would hold wild Texas longhorns, and also feared the barbs would injure cattle. In 1877 John W. Gates, later known as "Bet-You-a-Million" Gates, built a barbed wire corral in San Antonio, into which 25 longhorns were stampeded. The fence held and the cattle were not injured. Gates eventually controlled several wire companies and in 1898 formed the American Steel and Wire Company, with a capital of $90,000,000. The invention of barbed wire came at a time when open-range cattle raising was ending. Government land was being occupied by farmers, and ranchers were forced to buy land and fence it. On the western plains wood was scarce and barbed wire was the cheapest fencing.

Calamity Jane
Calamity Jane was a frontier woman of some renown. Many legends and stories have been told about her. It is difficult to sort fact from fiction in many cases, but one thing is certain, she led a life that few women of that time would have survived.
Calamity Jane was born May 1, 1852, near Princeton, Mo. with the given name of Martha Jane Cannary. Most accounts of her life agree that the family moved to Virginia City, Montana around the year 1865. Calamity Jane was always interested in things like riding, shooting and hunting. She gained the respect of many men in the wagon train they traveled with. She became an expert horsewoman and sharp shooter at an early age. Martha often fished and hunted with the men alongside her father and brothers.
Calamity Jane and Wild Bill Hickock were often linked romantically in film, books, etc., but this was highly unlikely. She knew him just a short time before he was shot dead in a saloon in Deadwood by Jack McCall.
Deadwood, South Dakota was the site of some major gold strikes and Calamity Jane worked as a bullwhacker, hauling machinery and supplies from town to the mining camps. She also worked as a pony express rider and carried the U.S. mail between Deadwood and Custer cities. It was a fifty-mile trail and considered to be one of the roughest trails in those famous Black Hills. Calamity Jane was well respected for her horsemanship and ability to make the trip quickly and with little incident. This gained her new respect and admiration in the Deadwood area.
