Giraldus Cambrensis
Giraldus Cambrensis (c. - c. ), also known as Gerald of Wales , was a medieval clergyman and chronicler of his times . Born in around 1146 at Manorbier Castle in Pembrokeshire , he was of mixed Norman and Welsh blood, his real name being Gerald de Barri. Gerald was a nephew of the Bishop of St David's , and had a church education at Gloucester , followed by a period of study in Paris . His expectations of succeeding his uncle as bishop in were dashed, possibly because of his Welsh blood. Despite this rejection, he became chaplain to King Henry II of England in , and was chosen to accompany one of the king's sons, John , on an expedition to Ireland . This was the catalyst for his literary career, his account of his findings being published as Topographia Hibernica ). He followed it up, shortly afterwards, with an account of Henry's conquest of Ireland, the Expugnatio Hibernica . Having thus demonstrated his usefulness, Gerald was selected to accompany the Archbishop of Canterbury Baldwin of Exeter , on a tour of Wales in , the object being a recruitment campaign for the Third Crusade . His account of that journey, the

Giraldus Cambrensis
Giraldus Cambrensis (Gerald de Barry) was a distinguished writer, historian, and ecclesiastic of the early Middle Ages ; b. in Manorbeer, Pembrokeshire , about the year 1147; d. probably between the years 1216 and 1220. His father, William de Barry, was one of the most powerful of the Welsh nobility at the time. Though Gerald's brothers adopted the profession of arms he himself followed a more peaceful course, devoted himself to study, and, influenced by his uncle, the Bishop of St. David's , resolved to become an ecclesiastic . He went to Paris to continue his studies; and, if we are to believe his own account, he was looked upon here as a model of piety and learning. He returned to England about 1172, and was employed by the Archbishop of Canterbury on various ecclesiastical missions in Wales , where he distinguished himself for his efforts to remove the abuses then flourishing in the Welsh Church . He was appointed Archdeacon of Brecknock . On the death of his uncle, the

Feast 18 June Osana (698–750) was a Northumbrian princess , whose local following as a saint developed informally after her death, though she was never officially canonised . Centuries after her death, she was described by the Norman-Welsh chronicler Geraldus Cambrensis (died 1223) as the sister of King Osred I of Northumbria , which would make her the daughter of King Aldfrith of Northumbria . Osana was depicted by Geraldus as inflicting a miraculous flagellation from her grave in Howden Yorkshire , upon a concubine of the priest of the collegiate church there, a moral tale intended to inculcate clerical celibacy . Celibacy of the Anglo-Saxon clergy was not expected in Osana's time; when it began to be enforced from the top at even the higher levels, with Archbishop Anselm 's council of London, 1102, it continued to be resisted in Britain, though it was a central objective of Gregorian reform Geraldus records "In the north of England beyond the Humber , in the church of Hovedene , the concubine of the rector incautiously sat down on the tomb of St. Osana, sister of king Osred, which projected like a wooden seat; on wishing to retire, she could not be removed, until the people came to her assistance; her clothes were rent, her body was laid bare, and severely afflicted with many strokes of discipline, even till the blood flowed; nor did she regain her liberty, until by many tears and sincere repentance she had showed evident signs of compunction."
