Tommaso Campanella From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search Tommaso Campanella Tommaso Campanella in Stilo Tommaso Campanella (5 September 1568 – 21 May 1639), baptized Giovanni Domenico Campanella , was an Italian philosopher , theologian, astrologer , and poet. edit Biography Born in Stignano (in the county of Stilo ) in the province of Reggio di Calabria in southern Italy , Campanella was a child prodigy . Son of a poor and illiterate cobbler , he entered the Dominican Order before age fifteen, taking the name of fra' Tommaso in honour of Thomas Aquinas . He studied theology and philosophy with several masters. Early on, he became disenchanted with the Aristotelian orthodoxy and attracted by the empiricism of Bernardino Telesio (1509–1588), who taught that knowledge is sensation and that all things in nature possess sensation. Campanella wrote his first work, Philosophia sensibus demonstrata ("Philosophy demonstrated by the senses"), published in 1592, in defence of Telesio. In Naples he was also initiated in astrology ; astrological speculations would become a constant feature in his writings.

At the age of fourteen, he entered the Dominican order and took the name Tommaso. His formal training in philosophy and theology was in Dominican houses. Early in his career he became disenchanted with Aristotelian philosophy and became a follower of Bernardino Telesio (1509-1588), whose great work De Rerum Natura (after Lucretius, see atomism ) influenced him greatly. Telesio thought that all knowledge is sensation and that intelligence is therefore an collection of isolated data provided by the senses. For this his books were placed on the Index of Forbidden Books after his death. But Telesio's philosophy, so influential in the south of Italy, pointed the way to empiricism. In 1592 Campanella published Philosophia Sensibus Demonstrata , or "Philosophy Demonstrated by the Senses," in defense of Telesio.

Tommaso Campanella From LoveToKnow 1911 TOMMASO CAMPANELLA Italian Renaissance philosopher, was born at Stilo in Calabria . Before he was thirteen y ears of age he had mastered nearly all the Latin authors presented to him. In his fifteenth year he entered the order of the Dominicans , attracted partly by reading the lives of Albertus Magnus and Aquinas, partly by his love of learning. He took a course in philosophy in the convent at Morgentia in Abruzzo, and in theology at Cosenza . Discontented with this narrow course of study, he happened to read the De Rerum Natura of Bernardino Telesio , and was delighted with its freedom of speech and its appeal to nature s rather than to authority. His first work in philosophy (he was already the author of numerous poems) was a defence of Telesio, Philosophia sensibus demonstrata (1 591). His attacks upc-. established authority having brought him into disfavour with the clergy, he left Naples , where he had been residing, and proceeded to Rome . For seven years he led an unsettled life, attracting attention everywhere by his talents and the boldness of his teaching. Yet he was strictly orthodox, and was an uncompromising advocate of the pope's temporal power. He returned to Stilo in 1598. In the following year he was committed to prison because he had joined those who desired to free Naples from Spanish tyranny. His friend Naudee, however, declares that the expressions used by Campanella were wrongly interpreted as revolutionary. He remained for twenty-seven years in prison. Yet his spirit was unbroken; he composed sonnets, and prepared a series of works, forming a complete system of philosophy. During the latter years of his confinement he was kept in the

His The City of the Sun , originally written in Italian in 1602, just after Campanella was condemned to life imprisonment for sedition and heresy, is an important utopian tale that may have influenced Bacon's New Atlantis . In it, Campanella presents an early vision of life inside the Sun Campanella was born at Stilo in Calabria, and studied at Naples and Cosenza. He entered the Dominican order when he was 15 and soon became doubtful of the prevailing scholastic philosophy by the writings of Telesius. The results of his first studies were given in his Philosophia Sensibus Demonstrata, etc (Naples, 1591), which contained a defense of Telesius. His controversial views made him unpopular with the orthodox monks and schoolmen and he was forced to flee Naples to Rome, and then to Florence, Venice, Padua, and Bologna. He returned to Calabria in 1599, but being suspected of involvement in a political conspiracy, he was seized and confined in a Neapolitan dungeon for 27 years, tried five times and repeatedly tortured, accused of heresy, and declared the author of a book that had been published 30 years before he was born.
