1795 - Carlyle Was born in Ecclefechan, Scotland on December 4, 1975. 1813 - Educated at Annan Academy and took up arts and mathematics in Edinburgh University. Upon his graduation he became a teacher at Kirkcaldy. 1818 - Commissioned to write articles for the Edinburgh Encyclopedia and for the Edinburgh Review. 1819-1821 - Carlyle went back to the University of Edinburgh, where he suffered an intense confusion in faith and conversion that would provide the material for Sartor Resartus. 1825 - Began translating the original works of the German writers Goethe and Schiller. He also wrote his own original work the "The Life of Schiller". 1826 - Carlyle married Jane Baillie Welsh and moved to London. 1832 - Carlyle's first major work, "Sartor Resartus". 1858-1865 - Carlyle's last major work was the epic life of "Frederick the Great". Carlyle's opinion about Frederick, it epitomised the transition from the liberal Enlightenment ideals of the 18th century to a new modern culture of spiritual dynamism. 1875 - Appointed as rector of the University of Edinburgh.
