This one film spawned seven sequels, countless imitations, and ignited the slasher-film boom that flourished and dominated the horror film industry during the late 1970s and early 1980s. At the same time, it would be unfair to categorize John Carpenter as just a horror film director, as he has also created exceptional science fiction and action films. However, it is worth noticing that even if the majority of Carpenter's films belong to a fantastic genre, they all bear a strong influence from the western. Regardless of their subject matter, the films directed by John Carpenter are characterized by his mastery of the cinematographical craft, and by the showcasing of engaging narratives that convey a profound commentary on the many social, racial, gender and sexual anxieties of our modern world. Dark Star John Carpenter was born January 15, 1948 in Carthage, New York, and raised in Bowling Green, Kentucky. From an early age, Carpenter showed a strong interest in films and filmmaking. The westerns directed by Howard Hawks and John Ford, as well as the many low budget science fiction films from the 1950s, had a strong influence on him during his youth. His father, an established musician, also influenced him in the development of his musical skills. In the late 1960s Carpenter enrolled in the film program at the University of Southern California (USC), one of the most respected film schools in the USA. It was in the early 1970s, still under the aegis of USC and as part of his Master's thesis project, that Carpenter directed his first film.

Born into an affluent Chicago shipping family, Carpenter traced his ancestry back to the Pilgrims. His musical studies began with his mother, a passionate amateur singer, and continued with John Knowles Paine at Harvard and in later life with Elgar in Rome and Bernard Ziehn in Chicago. After his graduation in 1897, he entered the family business, and, like Ives , for the rest of his career worked as an executive by day and a composer in his leisure hours. Unlike Ives (who hurled invectives at Carpenter's early work PERAMBULATOR), however, his music was far-more mainstream and accessible. In 1915 Carpenter became interested in incorporating elements of popular musicTin Pan Alley and jazzinto his works. His 1921 musical pantomime KRAZY KAT, with its dazzling orchestration that influenced Gershwin, enjoyed a great success and resulted in a commission from Russian impresario Serge Diaghilev for an American ballet. Carpenter's resulting composition, SKYSCRAPERS, eventually was premiered at the Metropolitan Opera in 1926, greatly enhancing his reputation as a composer. Until his death in Chicago in 1951, he devoted the rest of his life to creating two symphonies, a violin concerto, several tone poems, and over fifty songs. Carpenter's vocal literature is enlivened by his impeccable taste in poetry, his luxuriant melodic inspiration, and his fluid settings of text. Adventures in a Perambulator A Symphony by John Alden Carpenter Readers who are interested in baby treatment may be interested to know that a symphony has been composed about a baby's outing with his nurse in a pram. Saffy has prepared an introduction, and these are followed by the composer's own notes. I have used the beautiful CD cover picture for the cover illustration of the 2001 edition of 'Dummy Discipline Digest'. Recently while browsing a local record shop I came across a recording in the classical section that I thought would be suitable for adult babies everywhere. The title of the piece is 'Adventures in a Perambulator', by an American composer called John Alden Carpenter (1876-1951). I first became familiar with the piece several years ago, but this new CD is a modern recording and has the advantage of costing under a fiver! Although a largely forgotten figure now, John Alden Carpenter was among the foremost American composers of his generation. Many of the leading conductors and orchestras of the period performed his music. At the height of his fame in the 1920's he was even commisioned to write a ballet for Dyagilev's Ballets Russe. 'Adventures in a Perambulator' was written in 1914 for the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and became an instant hit. The depiction of a day in the life of a baby, inspired by the composer's only child, Ginny, represented an unusual scenario and the piece, in fact, was chosen by Walt Disney for an ultimately aborted sequel to 'Fantasia'. Latent Image - March 1990 Director's Profile: John Carpenter by Eric Beetner Emerson College There are few images from film that it seems people will remember forever. The shower scene from Psycho will not soon be forgotten, and anyone who has seen Michael Myers slowly sit up behind Jamie Lee Curtis in Halloween won't forget that for a long, long time. That image came from the modern master of terror and suspense John Carpenter. Since he was five, Carpenter has been dedicated to movie making and, more specifically, to science fiction and horror films. The 3D version of It Came From Outer Space (Universal 1953) really inspired Carpenter and just three years later, with an 8mm camera given to him as a present, he was making his own short films. Not bad for a twelve year old from Bowling Green, Kentucky. (though it would be hard to find a copy of his film Gordon the Space Monster at your local video store). For a while, music took precedence over filmmaking while he sang and played bass in a band at Western Kentucky University. By his senior year, though, Carpenter had made up his mind and he headed out to USC film school in 1968. Hall "Dexter" is a TV series that seems to get better with each successive season — and the show’s audience continues to grow along with the quality of the series. Loyal "Dexter" fans know that the show is less about gore and violence and more about the smartly written characters and how they are compellingly their psyches are portrayed. After all, there’s no other series on TV like "Dexter," which is about a vigilante serial killer named Dexter Morgan (played by Michael C. Hall ), who leads a double life working as a blood-spatter expert in Miami’s police department. The fourth season of "Dexter" (which aired from September to December 2009) was probably the best and most shocking so far. John Lithgow joined the cast as Arthur Mitchell, a.k.a. the Trinity Killer, an elusive serial murderer who has been getting away with his crimes for decades. Dexter is determined to find the Trinity Killer himself and murder him. But Dexter is also dealing with the added pressures of being a new husband and father, having married his longtime girlfriend, Rita Bennett (played by J ulie Benz ), at the end of the show’s third season. Dexter and Rita have a newborn baby together, and they are also raising Rita’s two kids from a previous marriage.

John Carpenter Genius Again... for a While If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, director John Carpenter must be the most flattered filmmaker around. Kurt Russell and Jamie Lee Curtis want Carpenter to make sequels to their early hits. Twenty years after the release of Carpenter's Halloween , studios can't grind out Halloween knock-offs fast enough to meet box office demand. "I know that the producer of The Thing went to Universal recently and pitched them the idea of making The Thing II . But he said: 'Imagine it: these teenagers arrive in Antarctica...'" Carpenter told fans at the Atlanta, Ga., science fiction convention DragonCon on September 4. The audience laughed when Carpenter added he didn't think it was going to work. The Back to the Future town square on the Universal Studios lot is serving as a different place in a different kind of future. Technically, production notes call it the "Happy Kingdom" sequence. But it could be standing in for Disneyland's Magic Kingdom gone to hell in the year 2013. A gigantic earthquake has turned Los Angeles and environs into an island. The town square, lit eerily by torches and oil drum fires, is covered with graffiti, broken windows and some 400 extras costumed as all manner of anti-social types, from bikers to gangstas. In director John Carpenter's world, this should come as no surprise. Since his 1976 film, Assault on Precinct 13 , the forces of evil have stood united. It's the forces of good who are continually at war with one another over what to do next. In the world of Snake Plissken (actor Kurt Russell), the lead character in Escape from New York who now finds himself having to Escape from LA , the "so-called" forces of good the police and government are sometimes indistinguishable in their methods from the forces of evil.
