Alice, Harry Potter and the Computer Game: a study of the relationship between children's fantasy adventure stories and interactive computer games

How often one wishes to learn some magic and to be Peter Pan or Harry Potter or visit Wonderland with Alice! But, then again I often wonder, would their stories remain the same if I stepped into their roles? Would I have acted differently? And, would that have changed the narrative altogether? Then, what if every one of us wanted to 'be' Harry Potter, in his or her own separate way? Then what would happen to the infinity of Harry Potter stories, thus generated? The result we might expect would be chaos. The actual result, however, would be something else: it would be a computer game! In this paper I would like to propose that the multiple possibilities of narrative action in children's fiction, especially fantasies such as Alice's Adventures in Wonderland or the Harry Potter stories, bring these stories very close to computer games. I believe that certain sub-genres of children's fiction work with premises similar to the computer game as regards narrative flexibility and other features. A child's dream, as in Alice or in

About the Collection The Alice 100 Collection celebrates the 100th Anniversary of the first publication of Alice in 1865. Over a seven year period, a well known rare book dealer in Victoria, R.D.Hilton Smith gathered almost 500 books for the collection. The collection includes more than 200 editions of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland usually accompanied by Through the Looking Glass and displays the work of more than 80 illustrators. The collection includes the 1866 official first edition to a calf-bound set that bears Alice Hargreaves' (Alice's married name) signature. The collection also includes parodies and imitations, musical and stage productions, film stills, translations, as well as other works by and about Carroll. In 1965, the collection was donated to the University of British Columbia by the graduating class of 1925 in celebration of their 40th anniversary. Today, this delightful collection can be found in the Special Collections Division.

Alice's Adventures in Wonderland
These books are collectors items now, and many command a premium in the antiquarian book market. Harvard, Princeton, and the Library of Congress house collections that are rarely seen by the public. Private collections abound, including that of the Lovetts, and many illustrations can be seen in the recent Bantam edition compiled and arranged by Cooper Edens.
(Note, I do not deal in buying and selling old books. For information about prices of Alice books, you may want to try Antiquarian Booksellers' Association of America (ABAA) World Wide Web Server.
The passage of time has put many of these works into the public domain as well, at least in the U.S. I offer here, from my own collection, a complete catalog of the color plates by the following artists:
Attwell, Mabel Lucie

Gutmann, Bessie Pease
. New York: Dodge, 1907.
Hudson, Gwynedd M.
London: Hodder, 1922; New York: Dodd, 1922.

The Mouse's Tale
by Lewis Carroll
"Mine is a long and a sad tale!" said the Mouse, turning to Alice, and sighing. "It is "Fury said to a mouse, That he met in the house, 'Let us both go to law: I will prosecute you. Come, I'll take no denial; We must have a trial: For really this morning I've nothing to do.' Said the mouse to the cur, 'Such a trial, dear sir, With no jury or judge, would be wasting our breath.' 'I'll be judge, I'll be jury,' Said cunning old Fury; 'I'll try the whole cause, and condemn you to death.' " "You are not attending!" said the Mouse to Alice, severely. "What are you thinking of?" "I beg your pardon," said Alice very humbly, "you had got to the fifth bend, I think?" "I had not! " cried the Mouse sharply and very angrily. "A knot!" said Alice, always ready to make herself useful, and looking anxiously about her. "Oh, let me help to undo it!" "I shall do nothing of the sort, said the Mouse, getting up and walking away. "You insult me by talking such nonsense!" This poem, one of the most famous English examples of emblematic verse, appears in chapter three of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland . Its title bears the distinction of being a quadruple pun . Martin Gardner notes in The Annotated Alice that it may have been inspired by Tennyson, who "once told Carroll that he had dreamed a lengthy poem about fairies, which began with very long lines, then the lines got shorter and shorter until the poem ended with fifty or sixty lines of two syllables each. (Tennyson thought highly of the poem, but forgot it completely when he awoke.)"

Comparing the Fantasy world of 'Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland’ to ‘Narnia’
I just wanted to get some peoples thoughts on the similarities and differences between the fantasy world of 'Wonderland' and that of 'Narnia' from 'The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe' What do you think the major similarities and differences are and what type of effect do you think these differences have had on each story? I can see that one major similarity is that both worlds are ruled by and evil Queen but 'Wonderland' seems to bend the rules of reality a bit more, how does this affect the story for the reader Posted By at Thu 9 Jul 2009, 3:36 PM

Quotes for inverse nature of the looking glass world
I've been searching for a good quote that highlights the inverse nature of the looking glass world. The hill/valley discussion at the beginning is amusing, as well as the fact that Alice must walk the opposite direction of where she wants to go. Are there any other good, rather short quotes that highlight this inverse nature? Posted By at Wed 28 Apr 2010, 1:37 PM
