Fencing Authorities of the 16 th Century By Baron Lyelf the Lame (Bob Lyle) A Note on Sources The first thing to remember about the schools of defense of the sixteenth century and earlier is that we know very little about the schools. We do have a number of books which can give us an idea of what was taught, but with three cautions: Few are written in English, they were often out of date when published, and they sometimes did not include the author's full thoughts. For those (like myself) without facility in other languages, there are still some valuable sources. Egerton Castle wrote Schools and Masters of Fence in 1892, and he appears to have had most of the early sources available and was able to read them in the original. It is popular to disparage him for holding Victorian swordsmanship as superior to all previous schools, but this is a moot point. The period manuals available in English are di Grassi, Saviolo, and Silver. Di Grassi is the Italian manual anonymously translated into English in 1594. Saviolo was an Italian master who taught and wrote in London in the third quarter of the 16 th century. Silver was a native English master who wrote the vituperative, entertaining, and sometimes useful

    Lunge (fencing)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search For other uses, see Lunge (disambiguation) The lunge is the fundamental offensive fencing technique used with all three fencing weapons: foil épée and sabre . It is common to all contemporary fencing styles.

    edit Background
A number of things happen at almost the same time during the execution of a lunge:
  • The blade arm extends for the earliest possible arrival on the defender. The front leg kicks forward, with the heel barely skimming the floor. The back leg straightens powerfully and the back arm is forcefully thrown straight back, pushing the body explosively forward. The cut (sabre) or thrust (all three weapons) arrives on the defender. The front heel reaches its end and comes firmly into contact with the floor. The front leg absorbs the body's forward momentum as the front foot rocks forward to full contact with the floor, ending with the front knee directly over the heel and the front foot pointed straight ahead. The back arm, shoulders, hips, and the front thigh end up parallel with the floor in a stable and balanced position.
  • The lunge is the most basic and most important method of offensive scoring. It is fundamental to the attack, just as the guard is fundamental to the parry system. A lunge delivers the attack instantaneously and without any warning. It also allows time and a firm position for the fencer to recover safely in the event of failure.

Two hour excursion. An exact replica of Lord Egerton’s English home, Tatton Hall (the most visited of all the National Trust properties).
Lord Egerton, fourth baron of Tatton, first came to Kenya in the 1920s.  A keen hunter and photographer, he was enchanted by the country and bought 1,900 acres of farmland near his close friend Lord Delamere.
While on long leave in England, he fell in love with an eligible young lady who would not consider marrying him, as she had been brought up to live in a castle, not a mud hut. Lord Egerton returned to Kenya and built a 52 room castle near Njoro, modelled on the family mansion in Knustford, complete with oak panelling – the oak imported from England – and a magnificent ballroom. It took him several years to create such a perfect home for his bride to be, that by the time it was finished, his lady friend had fallen in love with someone else.
Lord Egerton then threw his energies into farming.  He set up Egerton Agricultural College on 1,200 acres of land near Delamere’s plant breeding station, now part of Egerton University. His entire family fortune was sunk into developing Kenya’s agriculture. He died in 1958 leaving no heir.  The castle is a shadow of its former glory, but is open to the public.
