Benvenuto Cellini
Born: 1 November 1500, Florence Died: 14 February 1571, Florence BENVENUTO CELLINI was one of the enigmatic, larger-than-life figures of the Italian Renaissance: a celebrated sculptor, goldsmith, author and soldier, but also a hooligan and even avenging killer. The son of a musician and builder of musical instruments, Cellini's first major brush with the law came as an early teenager: He was banished from his native Florence for his alleged role in a brawl. As a result, he received his early artistic training not only from the Florentine goldsmith Marcone [Antonio di Sandro], but also from Francesco Castoro, a goldsmith of Siena. After further visits to Bologna and Pisa, Cellini was allowed to return to Florence and continue his work there. In 1519 Cellini removed to Rome, remaining until the city's fall to the Spanish Emperor in 1527. Among Cellini's surviving works dating to this early period in his career is a gold medallion with carved stone inset, "Leda and the Swan," created for Gonfaloniere Gabbrello Cesarino and now in the collection of the museum at Vienna. Another of his patrons in the period was Cardinal Patriarch Marco Cornaro (B-61), of the powerful Cornaro

Benvenuto Cellini
Benvenuto Cellini November 1 February 13 ) was an Italian goldsmith painter sculptor ... soldier and musician of the Renaissance He was born in Florence , where his family, originally landowners in the Val d'Ambra, had for three generations been settled. His father, Giovanni Cellini, was a musician and artificer of musical instruments ; he married Maria Lisabetta Granacci, and eighteen years elapsed before they had any progeny. Benvenuto (meaning "Welcome") was the third child. The father destined him for the same profession as himself, and endeavoured to thwart his inclination for design and metal work. When he had reached the age of fifteen his youthful predilection had become too strong to be resisted, and his father reluctantly gave consent to his being apprenticed to a goldsmith, Antonio di Sandro, nicknamed Marcone. He had already attracted some notice in his native place, when, being implicated in a fray with some of his companions, he was banished for six months to Siena , where he worked for Francesco Castoro ( Fracastoro ), a goldsmith; from thence he removed to

Biography
Italian renaissance artist, a goldsmith historically renowned as the greatest designer of metal of the medieval period, if not of all time. He was also a fine sculptor. Son of a architect-musician, he served as an apprentice to a goldsmith. As a youth, Cellini fled to Rome after a duel, then to France. Back in Rome,1523-1540, he received commissions from princes and popes for jewelry, medallions, coins, vases and small objects. His personal capacity for pride and wrath were still unresolved; he murdered two men, fought others, was imprisoned, escaped and traveled frequently. While in France, 1540-1545, he made his famous saltcellar in gold and enamel. From 1554, he concentrated on full-scale sculpture and busts. He was the author of a spirited, self-centered autobiography, written 1558-1566 and published posthumously in 1728.

Biography of Benvenuto Cellini
In Madrid he sculpted his Cristo for the Escorial from a single marble block (1556-1557). In 1558 he began to write his autobiography "La Vita", which with the power of its narrative and its self-referential and descriptive overstatements, remains a cornerstone of Italian literature, translated into German by Goethe in 1807. In 1567 Benvenuto interrupted "La Vita" (which remained incomplete) to write his "Treatises" on "Goldsmithing" and "Sculpture", outstanding examples of educational insights and technical knowledge. He married Piera de’ Parigi (in 1544 he had fathered a child following an affair with a model). Three years later, in 1571, he died in Florence. He is buried in the Church of Santa Maria Novella.
