Book Summary of Don Quijote: A New Translation, Backgrounds And Contexts, Criticism
"Backgrounds and Context" invites readers to explore the creative process that culminated in the publication of Don Quijote. Included are selections from works parodied by Cervantes (Amadis of Gaul and Orlando Furioso) and a portion of the spurious sequel to Part 1 written by Fernandes de Avellaneda. "Criticisms" presents fifteen major interpretations of both the novel and selected episodes, describing Cervantes' intellectual milieu, revealing how he infused new life into the literary modes and motifs he had inherited, and illustrating the fundamental importance of Don Quijote in the history of modern fiction. top

Cervantes and Don Quixote: 1605-2006
When Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra (1547-1616) published El Ingenioso Hidalgo Don Quixote de la Mancha in 1605 at the age of 57, it marked the highlight of a career filled with both adventure and misfortune. Using his own life as partial inspiration, Cervantes created a masterpiece in Don Quixote , the story of an ordinary (although perhaps crazy) Spaniard who, obsessed with stories of knights errant, renames himself Don Quixote and wanders through Spain with his squire Sancho Panzo in search of adventure. In the 400-plus years since it was first published, Don Quixote has continued to capture the imagination of its readers, and has been illustrated, translated, and adapted in a variety of ways.
