19.7.1829 Genf, 2.7.1899 Combs-la-Ville (Ile-de-France), ref., von Genf, ab 1879 franz. Staatsangehöriger. Sohn des André, Prof. für klass. Sprachen an der Genfer Akademie, und der Marie geb. Bourrit. Neffe von Antoine-Elisée ( ) und Joël ( ). ∞ 1856 Charlotte Rochaix, Dienstmädchen im Hause seiner Eltern. 1847-52 Stud. der Mathematik in Genf, der Philosophie und Philologie in Paris, Bonn und Berlin. Nach seiner Rückkehr nach Genf war C. als Lehrer und im Journalismus tätig. Ende der 1850er Jahre begann seine literar. Karriere mit den nach einer Orientreise (1858-59) verfassten "Causeries athéniennes", publiziert in der "Revue des Deux-Mondes", deren ständiger Mitarbeiter er daraufhin wurde. Dort veröffentlichte er u.a. auch seine erfolgreichen Romane "Le Comte Kostia" (1863) und "Paula Méré" (1864). 1875 liess sich C. in Paris nieder. 1870 wurde er zum Ritter, 1892 zum Offizier der Ehrenlegion ernannt und 1882 in die Académie française aufgenommen.
