    Agatha Christie
Agatha Christie was born in Torquay, in the county of Devon. Her father died when she was a child, and Christie was educated home, where her mother encouraged her to write from very early age. At sixteen she was sent to school in Paris where she studied singing and piano. Christie was an accomplished pianist but her stage fright and shyness prevented her from pursuing a career in music. When Christie's mother took her to Cairo for a winter, she wrote a novel there. Encouraged by Eden Philpotts, neighbor and friend in Torquay, she devoted herself to writing and had short stories published. In 1914 Christie married Archibald Christie, an officer in the Flying Royal Corps; their daughter, Rosalind, was born in 1919. During World War I she worked in a Red Cross Hospital in Torquay as a hospital dispenser, which gave her knowledge of poisons. It was to be useful when she started writing mysteries. Christie's first detective novel, The Mysterious Affair at Styles , introduced Hercule Poirot, the Belgian detective, who appeared in more than 40 books, the last of which was Curtain (1975). Poirot was an amiably comic character with egg-shaped head. Her other detective was Miss Marple, an elderly spinster who relied on her feminine sensitivity and empathy to solve crimes. She was born and lived in the village of St. Mary Mead. Marple was featured in 17 novels, the first being

Dame Agatha Christie [pseudonym Mary Westmacott] (1890-1976) , prolific English ‘Queen of Crime’ author of world-renown created such famous detectives as Hercule Poirot, the eccentric Belgian who relied on his keen grasp of logic to nab crooks; “Crime is terribly revealing. Try and vary your methods as you will, your tastes, your habits, your attitude of mind, and your soul is revealed by your actions.”—Poirot, in The ABC Murders Ch. 17 and English spinster Miss Jane Marple (partly inspired by her maternal grandmother) who used her feminine intuition to solve crime. Her motto: “The young people think the old people are fools, but the old people know the young people are fools.”

    What is the book about?
A man called U.N. Owen invites ten people to an island, Nigger Island. All these people have committed a murder, but they haven’t been punished for there crimes.
Once they are there, strange things begin to happen. While they were having a dinner they heard a voice. It accuses all ten people who are assembled of something terrible: murder.
Then they are killed mysteriously one by one. They think that the murderer is isolated on the island, but after they have searched the island they come to the conclusion that the murderer is one of them. Another problem is that they can’t leave the island.
The murders closely resemble to the nursery rhyme ‘ten little niggers’. Another mystery is the fact that they miss a china figure everytime someone dies. There were ten little figures at the beginning.
Everybody went crazy, they didn’t trust eachother, and they locked themselves in their rooms. Still people are being murdered. At the end only three people are left: Blore, Vera Claythorne and Philip Lombard. Blore dies as he goes to the house to fetch some food. Now only two people left. Vera manages to get Philip’s revolver and she kills him. After she has done that she feels relieved, but her conscience follows her and she hangs...

    Biography
British writer of some 67 detective mystery books that are universally popular. Her novels have sold more than a billion copies in English and another billion translated in more than 100 languages. By the time she was 40, Christie was a plain and matronly Englishwoman with hair forever locked in a marcelled wave, wearing dowdy housedresses; a deeply religious teetotaler who loved to putter in her garden. With a solitary childhood, Agatha was so painfully shy that she never did get accustomed to public appearance and seldom gave interviews. Her mother was not keen on education but in spite of her, five-year-old Agatha taught herself to read. She was 11 at the death of her easy-going dad, whom she adored. For her coming out, she traveled with her widowed mom to Cairo where the expense was less, all the while writing "stories of unrelieved gloom." There were several suitors before the handsome Archibald Christie appeared and captured her heart. They married on Christmas Eve, 1914, just before he left to fight the Hun two days later. For the war effort, Agatha became a dispenser (pharmacist). Over the next four years she barely saw her husband; their one daughter, Rosalind, was born in 1919. On a dare from her sister, she wrote "The Mysterious Affair of Styles" in two weeks, introducing for the first time her protagonist Hercule Poirot. The book was uniformly rejected by publishers.

Agatha Christie Taught at home by a governess and tutors, as a child Agatha Christie never attended school. She became adept at creating games to keep herself occupied at a very young age. A shy child, unable to adequately express her feelings, she first turned to music as a means of expression and, later in life, to writing. In 1914, at the age of 24, she married Archie Christie, a World War I fighter pilot. While he was off at war, she worked as a nurse. It was while working in a hospital during the war that Christie first came up with the idea of writing a detective novel. Although it was completed in a year, it wasn't published until 1920, five years later.

Agatha Christie (1890-1976) - Agatha Mary Clarissa Miller - wrote also as Mary Westmacott Very prolific British author of mystery novels and short stories, creator of Hercule Poirot, the Belgian detective, and Miss Jane Marple. Christie wrote more than 70 detective novels under the surname of her first husband, Colonel Archibald Christie. She also published a series of romances and a children's book. '"And now, messieurs et mesdames," said Poirot rapidly, "I will continue with what I was about to say. Understand this, I mean to arrive at the truth. The truth, however ugly in itself, is always curious and beautiful to seeker after it. I am much aged, my powers may not be what they were." Here he clearly expected a contradiction. "In all probability this is the last case I shall ever investigate. But Hercule Poirot does not end with a failure. Messieurs at mesdames, I tell you, I mean to know . And I shall know - in spite of you all."'
